Mario Kart World launched in the U.S. at a suggested retail price of $79.99 in both physical and digital formats. Calling it an $80 game is fair rounding; saying the whole internet rejected the price is not. The announcement drew visible online criticism and debate, but the available coverage does not measure how representative that reaction was.
How much did Mario Kart World cost at U.S. launch?
Nintendo announced on April 18, 2025, that the U.S. suggested retail price was $79.99 for both physical and digital copies. Nintendo restated that price when the game launched on June 5, 2025. The $80 figure is a rounded shorthand, not a different listed price. Nintendo’s April 18, 2025 pricing notice also listed the Switch 2 at $449.99 and the Switch 2 plus Mario Kart World bundle at $499.99.
What the bundle price means
The $499.99 bundle included the console and a digital copy of the game. Compared with the $449.99 console-only price, that is a $50 difference for someone buying the hardware and game together. It does not make the game a $50 purchase for someone who already owns a Switch 2.
Why did the $80 price prompt criticism?
The announcement became a prominent online debate, with posts and memes criticizing the price. Nintendo Life covered the question of whether $80 was too much, while Know Your Meme documented reactions in early April 2025. These sources show that criticism was visible; they do not establish that most players opposed the price or that “the internet” agreed.

No representative poll or population-level percentage is established by those reaction records. Social posts and meme engagement can show that a discussion took place, but cannot tell us how common the view was among buyers or players. The available sources also do not show that the backlash changed sales.
How did Nintendo explain its pricing?
Nintendo of America’s stated approach
In an April 7, 2025 interview with The Washington Post, Nintendo of America president Doug Bowser described the company’s approach as “variable pricing.” He said Nintendo considers a game’s development, the breadth and depth of its gameplay, its durability over time and how repeatable the experience is. Bowser also said Nintendo had not set a single benchmark for game prices. Read the interview.

Nintendo’s broader comments on costs and regions
In a May 9, 2025 financial-results briefing, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa said regional factors matter and that software pricing can take account of rising costs, including larger game files and longer development periods. That is Nintendo’s general explanation of how it considers prices—not a verified accounting of what caused Mario Kart World’s specific $79.99 U.S. MSRP. Nintendo’s FY2025 briefing Q&A.
What does the game offer?
Nintendo’s June 5, 2025 launch announcement described races with up to 24 drivers, Grand Prix routes that connect courses, the Knockout Tour mode and Free Roam, which includes hundreds of single-player missions. One system supports local split-screen for up to four players, and the game also offers local wireless and online play. These features describe the package, but whether they justify the price depends on what an individual player values. See Nintendo’s launch announcement.

Did Nintendo later change its digital pricing policy?
Yes, but that later policy does not change the U.S. launch-price history for Mario Kart World. Nintendo’s current Americas support FAQ says that beginning in May 2026, new Nintendo-published digital games exclusive to Switch 2 will have an MSRP different from their physical versions. Nintendo says the formats have different production and distribution costs and that offering different prices gives buyers more choices. The policy concerns new qualifying titles from that point onward; Nintendo’s 2025 notice listed Mario Kart World’s physical and digital versions at the same $79.99 U.S. MSRP. Nintendo’s April 18, 2025 notice also listed Donkey Kong Bananza at $69.99, so Mario Kart World was not evidence that every Switch 2 game had an $80 price. Bowser’s comments likewise described variable pricing rather than a universal standard. Any comparison should account for the game, region, format and date, as well as whether a bundle includes hardware.
