Giovanni’s May 2024 lineup
Niantic identified Shadow Groudon as Giovanni’s target during the March 2024 World of Wonders: Taken Over event. A May 2024 secondary guide’s search-result excerpt reported this lineup:

The official event announcement confirms Shadow Groudon but does not give the full lineup. The possible middle-slot Pokémon are reported by the secondary guide, so treat that detail as guide-reported rather than an official Niantic lineup confirmation.
How to prepare a flexible team
Open against Persian
Make a Fighting-type Pokémon your answer to Persian. The available sources do not establish a single best Pokémon or move, so choose from the counters you have ready rather than relying on an unsupported ranking.

Adjust for the middle Pokémon
Giovanni’s second Pokémon may be Garchomp, Kingdra, or Rhyperior. Since you cannot assume which one you will face, choose your response after it appears. Consider the matchup and whether a Pokémon you already selected can cover more than one slot; the sources do not support a specific named team or moveset as optimal.
Keep a Groudon answer for the finish
Shadow Groudon is Ground-type, so reserve a Pokémon suited to exploiting Ground’s weaknesses. No exact CP, level, move, or damage threshold is established for this battle, and no guaranteed counter can be inferred from the available lineup information.

What to change if you lose
Use the Pokémon Giovanni revealed to guide your next team choice, especially in the variable middle slot. If the middle matchup was the problem, replace or reposition that counter while keeping an answer for Persian and Shadow Groudon. This is a matchup-based adjustment, not a claim that a particular team has been tested.
How players unlocked the Giovanni encounter
Niantic’s World of Wonders: Taken Over announcement said a new Special Research story would be available at the start of the event. Progressing through it awarded a Super Rocket Radar, which players could use to pursue Giovanni. Event dates and the Frustration bonus
World of Wonders: Taken Over ran from March 27, 2024, at 12:00 a.m. to March 31, 2024, at 11:59 p.m. local time. During that event, Niantic said players could use a Charged TM to help a Shadow Pokémon forget Frustration. That was a temporary event bonus; its availability in May 2024 or today is not established by the announcement. Details are in Niantic’s event announcement.
