To salvage gear in Diablo 4, visit a Blacksmith in town, choose the items you want to destroy, review the salvage indicators, and confirm. Salvaging removes the item and can return crafting materials; eligible gear may also unlock an appearance or add a Legendary Aspect to your account-wide Codex of Power.
How to salvage gear at a Blacksmith
-
Travel to a town or settlement and find a Blacksmith. Look for the anvil icon on the map or minimap; Blacksmiths are found in cities and many settlements, according to Wowhead’s salvage guide.

Confirm the salvage action. The selected item is destroyed, and any eligible materials or unlocks are applied.
Check the item before you confirm
Salvage is irreversible for the selected item: do not choose gear that may be an upgrade or that you want to keep. The Blacksmith interface can also flag an item that contributes to a Codex of Power Aspect or unlocks an armor or weapon appearance. Wowhead describes a crossed-swords indicator for a Codex contribution and a red double-triangle indicator for an appearance unlock; inspect the live interface because labels and indicators can change between updates.

What salvaging gives you
Crafting materials
Salvage can return crafting materials, with the material depending on item type and rarity. Wowhead’s guide maps Iron Chunk to weapons and jewelry, Rawhide to armor and offhand items, Veiled Crystal to rare-or-better items, and named higher-tier materials to qualifying Legendary or Mythic items. These are guide-reported mappings, not a guarantee of a specific quantity or a universal current threshold. Check the salvage preview in your game version for what a selected item will yield.
Codex of Power Aspects
Qualifying Legendary gear may contribute a new or improved Aspect to the account-wide Codex of Power. Check the Blacksmith panel for the Codex indicator before confirming. If your goal is to preserve an Aspect from a Legendary item for later use, the supplied guide distinguishes extraction at the Occultist from salvaging; those are separate actions, so use the Occultist rather than assuming salvage preserves the Aspect as an extracted item.

Wardrobe appearances
Salvaging qualifying armor or weapons can unlock their appearance in the account-wide Wardrobe. The interface’s appearance indicator lets you spot an item that may add a transmog option before you destroy it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Salvage, extract, keep, or sell?
- Keep it if its stats or unique effect might help your build, or if you want to retain the item.
- Salvage it if you have decided the gear is expendable and want its materials or a marked Codex or appearance unlock.
- Extract its Aspect at the Occultist if preserving that Aspect for later use is the goal; extraction is not the same as salvage.
- Consider selling if your immediate priority is gold rather than materials. The available guides do not establish a current universal numerical rule for when selling is better, so compare the needs of your character rather than relying on a fixed break-even point.
Why salvage details can change
Diablo IV’s item systems are updated over time. Blizzard’s Season 11 announcement says its itemization changes are permanent and apply to both Seasonal and Eternal Realms, including changes to Tempering and Masterworking. Blizzard’s Season of Reckoning announcement describes further itemization and inventory updates and says the Urn of Reclamation boosts the chance of rare materials from salvage. That bonus is season-dependent, not a standing guarantee for every realm or season.
For that reason, rely on the live salvage panel for the item’s current preview. Do not assume exact material amounts, bulk-salvage exclusions, eligibility thresholds, or seasonal bonuses from an older guide apply unchanged. The step-by-step interface and material mappings above are reported by secondary guides; Blizzard’s announcements establish the broader itemization changes and seasonal modifier, not a complete salvage manual.
