Before settling in, tune the settings for your preferred challenge and comfort; then try abilities, watch for companion combos, and explore again when new routes open.
Adjust settings before you get comfortable
Difficulty and accessibility options can shape both challenge and clarity. Electronic Arts says, “Upon starting a new game, players can use our Customizable Difficulty system to choose the level of challenge they want to experience.” Its modular combat settings include enemy aggression, enemy resistances, and combat timing, so you can adjust parts of the challenge rather than treating difficulty as one fixed choice. EA’s accessibility guide documents these options alongside adjustable exploration guidance.
Exploration presets affect navigation markings and how far away interactable objects are highlighted. The guide also lists subtitle modes and advanced subtitle options, two UI text sizes, colorblind filters, visual threat indicators, adjustable camera shake, audio mixes, mono audio, and optional 3D audio for compatible hardware. Choose what makes information easier to follow or movement more comfortable; these settings are useful whether or not you consider yourself to need accessibility options.
The EA guide is based on the US English version for PC and consoles. Menu names and availability may vary by platform, localization, or later updates.

The choice is yours. Brace yourself, there are tough decisions to be made, allies to inspire, and a fight that needs every sword, staff and bow you can muster.
Pick a class for its feel, not because it is permanent
Rook’s three class choices are Warrior, Rogue, and Mage. Choose the combat style that appeals to you, then treat early encounters as a chance to learn what feels right rather than as a test you must pass with an optimal build.
EA says you can change your abilities outside combat and respec either individual skill nodes or the entire skill tree. That flexibility makes experimentation practical: try a skill combination, and change it if it does not suit your approach. Enemies have weaknesses and resistances, so adapting your abilities to the opposition is part of combat rather than a sign that your original choice was wrong. EA’s launch guide includes sample specializations, but it does not establish one best build for every player.

Build companion combos, not just damage totals
Companion abilities can apply conditions such as Sundered, Weakened, or Overwhelmed, while other abilities detonate those conditions for a follow-up effect. When choosing a party or assigning abilities, look for an Apply/Detonate pairing instead of judging each move only by its damage. Xbox Wire’s launch guide recommends checking the ability wheel for compatible moves; its starter tips also call out companion healing as a consideration.
EA says companion abilities can be changed outside combat, so you can adjust the setup as you learn what works. Xbox Wire’s October 31, 2024 article also notes that some companion equipment available from merchants can increase potion capacity or provide a revive. Treat those as launch-era tactical pointers, and read current item descriptions in your game before relying on a specific effect.

Explore, but do not treat every blocked path as a mistake
“Dragon Age: The Veilguard opens up for exploration after the Prologue ends,” EA writes. The available areas expand through the early quests, with side quests and loot worth looking for along the way.
Xbox Wire’s launch-era guide highlights hidden chests and materials, destructible containers, and optional spaces that require a particular companion ability. Explore naturally, note a path you cannot yet reach, and return after the relevant companion joins. You do not need to force access to every visible route on your first visit.

That same Xbox Wire guide describes duplicate equipment as a way to raise an item’s rarity and stats, and advises collecting Mementos and permanent stat-increase items from merchants. These are specific progression tips from its October 2024 article; check the descriptions and available options in your current game rather than assuming an exact value or effect.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Make time for companion and faction stories
Optional content is not all interchangeable padding. EA says companion and faction stories add to the experience, and that completing side content and companion quests directly affects how later stages unfold. If you care about the people traveling with Rook or want to engage with more of the story, make room for those quests instead of pushing only through the main path. This guidance is spoiler-light; it does not mean every optional task is mandatory.

Use the glossary if you are new to the series
You do not have to know every name or event from earlier Dragon Age games to get started. Xbox Wire describes The Veilguard as a valid starting point—an editorial assessment, not a developer guarantee—and points newcomers to the in-game reference: Library > Glossary > Lore. Use it when a term or piece of history is unfamiliar, rather than pausing your start to catch up on the entire series.
