Use Water damage, prepare for Oilwell Basin’s heat, and target Nu Udra’s front tentacles when it gives you an opening. The key is to dodge its tentacle windups and body slam, then use Watermoss-loaded Puddle Pods to douse burning parts when the fight heats up.
Prepare for the Oilwell Basin
Nu Udra is a fire-affiliated cephalopod that coats itself in oilsilt. When agitated, it can ignite that coating and add fire to its tentacle attacks. The in-game description reproduced by Push Square describes the transformation: “Usually, when sighted, Nu Udra is covered in oilsilt, but when enraged it will ignite the coating, transfiguring itself into a horror of flame.”
Bring Water damage if you can
Water is Nu Udra’s recommended elemental weakness, and its mouth is identified as a particularly useful target for Water damage in PC Gamer’s guide. Push Square also lists Water as its weakness. Use a Water-element weapon if one suits your weapon class and play style; the available guides do not establish one best weapon for every hunter.
Pack for heat and flames
- Bring Cool Drinks to deal with the Oilwell Basin’s environmental heat.
- Gather Watermoss and load it into your slinger as Puddle Pods. You can fire these at burning parts to douse them and weaken Nu Udra.
- Consider fire-resistant armor. For the standard Low Rank encounter, PC Gamer recommends Ajarakan armor, which also has Partbreaker; that is one guide’s suggestion, not a required set.
In PC Gamer’s described Low Rank progression, Nu Udra follows a fight against two Ajarakan, giving you a chance to prepare at camp.

Read the tentacle attacks and punish the openings
Nu Udra’s main threats are tentacle lunges, sweeps, slams, and grabs. Watch its posture rather than trying to trade hits: many of its attacks begin with a visible tentacle windup.
Dodge the overhead spin and forward slam
- Two tentacles twist overhead: Move clear of the spinning attack rather than staying close to its path.
- Tentacles rise in front of its face: Prepare for a forward body lunge and move out of its line.
- It leans back and exposes its underside: Evade to the side to avoid the body slam.
- It sweeps with its tentacles: Depending on your position, move inside toward the arm bases or get outside the sweep’s reach.
If Nu Udra grabs you, fire a slinger pod if you have one available to help escape.
Focus on the front arms when you have time
Use openings to attack wounds and sever tentacles. PC Gamer recommends prioritizing the front two arms because Nu Udra uses them frequently; severing arms limits the reach of its attacks, as Push Square notes. Slash-capable weapons can sever limbs. Blunt attacks remain viable: several parts have strong blunt damage ratings, so do not abandon a weapon you use effectively just to pursue severing.

When its oilsilt coating ignites, Nu Udra becomes more dangerous: its attacks gain fire and reach. The High Rank version may begin already aflame and can include additional fireball attacks, according to PC Gamer. Watch for the change in state and prioritize avoiding attacks over forcing a hit.

Adjust your approach to the quest
| Situation | What to account for | Practical approach |
|---|---|---|
| Standard Low Rank hunt | The described encounter follows two Ajarakan fights, and you can prepare at camp. | Consider Ajarakan armor for fire defense and Partbreaker, bring Cool Drinks, and load Watermoss into Puddle Pods. These are recommendations, not requirements. |
| High Rank hunt | Nu Udra may start aflame, and the fight can include additional fireball attacks. | Stay alert for the more threatening fire state; use Puddle Pods on burning parts and take safe openings rather than assuming the Low Rank pattern is unchanged. |
| Arch-Tempered quest | Arch-Tempered-specific advice is variant-specific and should not be treated as standard-hunt guidance. | Check the current quest and in-game hunter notes before applying advice intended for that variant. |
