The closest alternatives to Honkai: Star Rail are not all alike: Reverse: 1999 keeps turn-based team building and character collection but uses card-hand combat, while Another Eden trades the live-service rhythm for a long, single-player time-travel JRPG. This ranking weighs combat, roster building, story, and how much each game changes Star Rail’s ongoing progression loop. The first seven picks are turn-based RPGs; the final three are worthwhile only if you are open to a different combat style.

How these games are ranked

“Like Star Rail” can mean turn-based battles, collecting and developing a team, a continuing story, anime presentation, or a free-to-play progression loop. The ranking favors games that preserve several of those qualities, while calling out where their combat or structure diverges. It is a practical shortlist, not a claim that one ranking fits every player.

All of the first seven games use turn-based combat, but they do not reproduce Star Rail’s speed order, skill-point economy, and weakness-break system. The last three share character-driven presentation or strategic play but change the battle genre. Gacha and spending models are not directly ranked: the available comparisons do not establish a consistent, current basis for measuring them.

The 10 best games like Honkai: Star Rail

1. Reverse: 1999 — Best close match for story and turn-based team building

Reverse: 1999 is the strongest starting point if what you want is a story-focused RPG built around collecting characters and making tactical choices in turn-based fights. You bring up to four Arcanists and play spell cards called incantations. Matching cards can be merged to strengthen them, while building moxie enables ultimates. That hand-management layer makes combat feel different from Star Rail’s action order and weakness breaks, rather than like a reskin.

Its chapter-based, comparatively linear structure is also a shift from Star Rail’s journey through hubs and locations. Choose it for turn-based planning, roster building, and a prominent story; do not expect the same combat system or world structure. Udonis’s comparison guide describes its card-based combat and story format.

2. Another Eden: The Cat Beyond Time and Space — Best for a long single-player JRPG campaign

Another Eden is a better fit if your priority is a substantial time-travel story rather than a recurring live-service routine. It follows a classic JRPG pattern of visiting towns and dungeons, building a party, and fighting turn-based battles. That gives it some of Star Rail’s story-and-team appeal, but its campaign structure is closer to a traditional single-player adventure.

It has optional in-app purchases, so “single-player campaign” should not be read as “no monetization.” Its main distinction is the more classic journey and exploration loop. Udonis outlines those story and gameplay elements.

3. OCTOPATH TRAVELER: Champions of the Continent — Best for classic fantasy party tactics

This mobile single-player prequel swaps Star Rail’s sci-fi setting for a classic fantasy world presented in HD-2D. Its eight-character party is split between four active front-line members and four in the back. Combat revolves around targeting enemy weaknesses to Break them, then timing stronger actions through the Boost system.

The weakness-focused decisions may appeal to Star Rail players who like exploiting enemy vulnerabilities, but the party arrangement and Break-and-Boost rhythm are its own. It is a more traditional fantasy JRPG experience than an ongoing space-opera journey. Udonis’s guide describes the mobile game’s party setup and combat loop.

4. BrownDust2 — Best for grid positioning

BrownDust2 keeps turn-based battles and character collection, but makes placement a central tactical concern. Units occupy a quarter-view 3×4 grid, so positioning matters in a way Star Rail’s turn order and weakness-break system do not. Character costumes also form part of its collection and progression loop.

Pick it if you want a roster-based RPG whose fights ask you to think about where units stand. Its grid and costume systems are defining differences, not small variations on Star Rail’s combat. Udonis covers those mechanics.

5. Dislyte — Best for turn order, buffs, and debuffs

Dislyte pairs urban fantasy and myth-inspired characters with turn-based squad combat. Its tactical emphasis includes turn order, buffs and debuffs, and relic sets. That makes it a natural option if you enjoy planning a team and managing battle effects, though its progression is more gear-focused than Star Rail’s weakness-break battles.

Gear farming is a meaningful difference for players who would rather focus on story or combat encounters than repeat equipment progression. The comparison is about gameplay emphasis, not a claim that one game requires more spending. Udonis describes the combat and relic-set focus.

6. OUTERPLANE — Best for chained skills and team synergy

OUTERPLANE is a turn-based anime RPG built around skill chains and burst systems. Its fights reward timing those chains and coordinating a team, preserving the squad-planning appeal while changing how you execute attacks. Its mission-based structure is another departure: it does not frame the adventure as the same kind of broad journey across hubs and destinations.

It suits players seeking tactical team synergy in a mission format. Udonis highlights its chains, bursts, and structure.

7. Epic Seven — Best if you enjoy gear farming and optional PvP

Epic Seven is a turn-based gacha RPG with a story, PvE modes, gear farming, and optional PvP. It fits the broad character-collection and battle-planning brief, but equipment progression is a substantial part of its endgame. That makes it a less appealing pick if the grind is exactly what you hope to avoid.

Consider it if you want a long-running set of modes and do not mind making gear a major part of character development. Udonis’s overview notes the role of farming and PvP.

8. Genshin Impact — Best if you want HoYoverse’s world-building in an action RPG

Genshin Impact shares HoYoverse’s character-focused presentation, team-building, and expansive story world, but its combat is action-based rather than turn-based. It is the most obvious adjacent choice for someone who wants another large-scale HoYoverse adventure, not for someone seeking Star Rail’s turn-by-turn battles.

Go in expecting action combat and an open-world structure. Udonis and GameSpot’s gacha-game recommendations distinguish its combat from Star Rail.

9. Zenless Zone Zero — Best for stylish, timing-based action

Zenless Zone Zero is another HoYoverse option, but its battles are skill- and timing-based action rather than turn-based. Its urban, slice-of-life approach to story and team progression gives it a different mood and setting from Star Rail’s space opera.

Choose it if you want character development and a polished anime presentation but are happy to trade turn-based tactics for action. It is not a close mechanical match. GameSpot describes its action combat and story approach.

10. Arknights — Best for a larger strategic genre change

Arknights is tower defense, not a turn-based RPG or action RPG. Its appeal for Star Rail fans is instead layered strategy and world-building: you deploy and manage units to handle enemy waves rather than command a conventional party through turn-based attacks.

It belongs on this list only if “like Star Rail” means a character-driven game with strategic decisions, not similar combat. GameSpot identifies its tower-defense structure and story-world appeal.

Which game should you choose?

If you want… Start with… What changes from Star Rail
Turn-based team building and a strong story Reverse: 1999 Card-hand sequencing replaces Star Rail’s turn order and weakness breaks.
A long, classic single-player JRPG Another Eden Time-travel exploration and a campaign structure take priority over a live-service routine.
Weakness-targeting fantasy battles OCTOPATH TRAVELER: Champions of the Continent Eight characters rotate between front and back; Break and Boost shape the fight.
Position-based battles BrownDust2 Unit placement on a grid is central.
Action combat from HoYoverse Genshin Impact or Zenless Zone Zero Both replace turn-based battles with action; their settings and presentation differ.
Strategy without conventional RPG battles Arknights Tower defense replaces party combat.

If avoiding gacha is more important than finding a free-to-play equivalent, look beyond the ten picks. OCTOPATH TRAVELER is a premium PC JRPG listed on Steam with turn-based combat, eight traveler stories, and weakness targeting; this is a separate game from the mobile Champions of the Continent. Steam’s listing identifies it as a purchasable game.

Persona 5 Royal is another paid-game route for a player who wants a substantial RPG rather than another gacha recommendation. Atlus lists physical and digital standard editions, a collector’s edition, and Nintendo Switch among the platform options on its official product page. Check the edition and territory for your platform; the page does not establish current retailer stock.

What to check before downloading or buying

Platform support, regional availability, and store editions can change. Confirm the current official store listing for your device and region before committing, especially for a specific console or physical edition. The comparisons above identify gameplay and structural differences; they do not establish a standardized ranking of generosity, spending pressure, or time required for daily play.
