Which game fits your child?
For a child just learning platform games: Super Mario Bros. Wonder
Nintendo says Yoshi and Nabbit do not take damage from enemies, making those characters an option for players who are starting out. That protection does not prevent Nabbit from falling into gaps. The game supports up to four players locally, so an adult or sibling can join. Nintendo says online play requires a Nintendo Switch Online membership, a Nintendo Account, and internet access; additional accessories may be needed for multiplayer. Local play does not require Nintendo Switch Online.
For a gentler adjustable option: Yoshi’s Crafted World
Mellow mode gives Yoshi wings for an easier experience. One or two people can play on the same system, making this a good candidate if you want a parent or sibling beside the child.

For a child who prefers to play independently: Princess Peach: Showtime!
Nintendo lists the game for one player and offers a free demo on its US product page. Trying the demo is a practical way to see whether the controls and presentation suit your child before buying.
For shared play with several family members: Kirby Star Allies
Up to four players can play on one system. The game also has a challenging mode, so its difficulty should not be assumed to stay the same throughout.

For racing or varied family play: Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Mario Party Superstars
Nintendo’s official overview describes local multiplayer for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. The cited information does not specify a player count here, so check the product details for your edition and setup. Mario Party Superstars is another candidate, but the cited Nintendo page does not establish a beginner mode or player count; review its local-play details before choosing it for a group.
For families considering 3D adventures or role-playing: Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury and Super Mario RPG
Nintendo lists the US ratings and descriptors shown above, but the cited pages do not establish specific beginner supports or local player counts for these two games. Consider them only after checking gameplay footage or product details against the child’s comfort with controls and challenge.

How to choose for a five-year-old
- Decide who will play. For a child who wants company, start with games whose official pages confirm local multiplayer. For solo play, Princess Peach: Showtime! is explicitly listed for one player.
- Look for a concrete easing feature. Wonder’s protected characters and Crafted World’s Mellow mode are documented options, rather than a general promise that a game is easy.
- Check the rating where you live. ESRB classifications are for the United States. Other territories use their own rating systems, and a US rating should not be treated as a local classification.
- Preview before purchasing when possible. The listed Peach demo lets a family try that game; for other picks, confirm controls, modes, edition, and local multiplayer requirements on the regional product page.
- Confirm the exact edition and setup. Check that the listing is for Nintendo Switch, verify local player and accessory requirements, and distinguish local play from any online features.
Using Nintendo’s parent game finder
Nintendo’s parent-facing Game Finder lets families browse games rated Everyone or Everyone 10+ and says the selected games play on Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, and Switch Lite. That broad rating filter can help narrow a search, but it is not individualized advice for a five-year-old and does not replace checking a specific game’s content and play style.
What the evidence can—and cannot—say
Nintendo’s product pages establish features, player counts, and US ratings for the games noted here. They do not provide comparative testing with five-year-olds or a study identifying the best Switch games for that age. Treat this as a practical shortlist based on documented features, not an objective ranking or a developmental recommendation.
