The warning that D&D Beyond was “going to get worse before it gets better” described the platform’s first proposed transition to the 2024 Dungeons & Dragons rules—not its later policy. After users objected to a suggested workaround for keeping some 2014 options, D&D Beyond revised its plan: the company said players would retain previously acquired 2014 digital content and would not need to make homebrew copies to use it.
Why the original criticism emerged
In August 2024, Polygon criticized D&D Beyond’s announced transition from the 2014 fifth-edition rules to the new 2024 core books. The concern was practical: as newer versions replaced older entries in listings and references, players using 2014 characters might have to work around changes to spells and magic items.
D&D Beyond’s first rollout plan proposed marking older material as Legacy and updating some rules references, tooltips, and default listings to 2024 versions as the new books arrived. Its initial changelog also suggested that users who wanted replaced 2014 spells and magic items on character sheets might need to create homebrew copies. That original plan is now marked deprecated in the D&D Beyond changelog.
What D&D Beyond changed after feedback
D&D Beyond later revised the policy. In its changelog update, the D&D Studio said, “We heard your feedback loud and clear and thank you for speaking up.” The updated guidance said that players with access to the 2014 Player’s Handbook would retain their 2014 character options, spells, and magic items, and would not need homebrew copies to use them.

The company also said that customers with both digital Player’s Handbooks could choose from both sources when creating new characters. Existing sheets, according to the revised plan, would receive relabeling and renaming changes rather than a change to their underlying mechanics. D&D Beyond’s FAQ stated: “The game mechanics for your 2014 characters will not be impacted, and all spells, abilities, items, and conditions will display information in line with 2014 rules.” That is the company’s policy statement, not an independent test of every character sheet.
What to expect when building a 2014 or 2024 character
D&D Beyond’s character builder remains source-dependent: the rules year of a class and the sources enabled for character creation affect which options and spell lists appear. The official FAQ describes the distinction this way:

- A 2014 class using Legacy sources may show both 2014 and 2024 spells, with older spells tagged Legacy.
- A 2024 class uses the 2024 spell list.
- Users can control whether Legacy content appears in character creation.
- Some terminology has been updated on sheets, and references to rules that changed—such as certain conditions—may display both versions.
These rules do not mean every 2014 option works interchangeably with every 2024 class. If you are trying to add a specific spell, subclass, or item, check the character’s class rules and the source settings in the builder before assuming an option is missing or that you need to recreate it.
Will existing 2014 character sheets be affected?
D&D Beyond’s revised FAQ says the mechanics of 2014 characters would not be affected, and that their spells, abilities, items, and conditions would display information consistent with 2014 rules. The company did describe relabeling and renaming, and some shared rules references may expose both the old and new versions. In other words, a changed label or reference is not, by itself, evidence that a character’s 2014 mechanics have been replaced.

Free Rules, the Player’s Handbook, and the SRD are different
The 2024 Free Rules are an introductory subset of the game’s rules. D&D Beyond says that purchasing the digital 2024 Player’s Handbook grants access to all content in that source. Neither statement should be confused with the System Reference Document (SRD), which is aimed at creators and has a different scope.
In its May 2024 announcement, Wizards of the Coast described SRD 5.2 as a planned update to SRD 5.1 under the CC-BY-4.0 license. The announcement said the SRD would not include Dungeons & Dragons setting lore. The Free Rules, a purchased digital handbook, and the SRD therefore serve different purposes and do not offer identical content.

What the headline gets right—and what it leaves out
The headline captures the concern raised by the initial proposal: players feared that a transition toward 2024 listings could make it harder to use familiar 2014 content. But it is a historical editorial judgment about that proposal, not a description of the final policy or a measured verdict on everyone’s experience. D&D Beyond’s later update withdrew the suggested homebrew workaround and promised continued access to previously acquired 2014 options.
The rollout still involves choices about rule year, enabled sources, and which version of a reference is being viewed. D&D Beyond’s changelog also records ongoing platform maintenance, including an October 5, 2026 character-sheet timeout fix and Maps improvements. Those entries show that the service continues to be updated; they do not establish that all platform issues have been resolved.
