Astro Bot’s Game of the Year win at The Game Awards 2024 looks safe in retrospect, but the available evidence does not show that it was inevitable or widely forecast beforehand. The game had already won Best Game Direction during the ceremony, and Sony later confirmed it took home four awards—the most of any title that night. Its strongest case for the top prize is the quality of its inventive, tactile platforming, tempered by a real limitation: some PlayStation cameo levels work less well than the game’s original ideas.
What Astro Bot won at The Game Awards 2024
At The Game Awards 2024, Astro Bot, developed by Team Asobi and associated with Sony Interactive Entertainment, won Game of the Year and Best Game Direction. It was competing for GOTY against Balatro, Black Myth: Wukong, Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, and Metaphor: ReFantazio. Sony’s FY2024 third-quarter speech transcript says Astro Bot won four categories, including Best Family Game, more than any other title at the event. Sony’s transcript confirms the total; Epic Games Store’s event recap lists the nominees and winners.

That result is separate from PlayStation Blog’s own player-voted Game of the Year poll. PlayStation reported more than 1.6 million votes globally across 19 categories. Astro Bot won Platinum in Best PS5 Game, Best Art Direction, Best Audio Design, Best Use of DualSense, and Best Accessibility Features; Team Asobi also won Studio of the Year. Those player-voted results are useful evidence of enthusiasm for the game’s presentation and controller use, but they are not a vote count for The Game Awards. PlayStation Blog’s poll results identify the awards and their separate voting context.
Was Astro Bot’s GOTY win predictable?
It became easier to read as a likely winner during the ceremony. Astro Bot took Best Game Direction before the GOTY announcement, a result that Washington Post live coverage described as a possible signal of what was coming. Its eventual four-award total further shows that the win was not an out-of-nowhere choice. The Washington Post’s live coverage captured that in-the-moment context.

But “predictable” needs a limit. The same live report said that Astro Bot’s direction win and Metaphor: ReFantazio’s Best Narrative win left the reporter unsure which would take the top award. That is one journalist’s contemporaneous assessment, not a poll or a record of broad consensus. The Game Awards did not publish a GOTY vote margin or ballot breakdown in the cited material, so there is no basis here for claiming Astro Bot was certain to win or that the result was unanimous in spirit.
Why the win was deserved
The case for Astro Bot rests on how consistently it turns a simple platforming foundation into fresh play. Gene Park’s September 2024 Washington Post review describes levels that keep introducing new mechanics and playful situations, with transformations that change how a stage works rather than merely decorate it. Detailed visual and physics reactions give the worlds a lively, responsive quality, while the game’s clear controls let those surprises remain easy to read.

- Humor and Action: Enjoy funny dialogue, amusing interactions, and non-stop action that keeps you engaged in Dog Man’s world. Rewards and Collectibles: Revisit levels with new gadgets to find secret areas, and rescue the missing Comic Club members.
- Art Style: Great animations inspired by the books, with comic-style sound effects that add a fun, cartoonish touch to the action.
The PS5 and DualSense are part of that craft, not just the delivery system. Park notes how haptic feedback and controller audio reinforce what is happening on screen, adding texture to actions without making the controls complicated. Team Asobi studio director Nicolas Doucet described the appeal of first-time discovery in an interview with Park: “When she played a video game for the first time, I saw in her eyes something that happened that I am not capable of having anymore.” His remark, about watching his daughter play, speaks to the sense of wonder the game aims to create; it is not evidence about how award voters decided. Park’s review and interview discuss the game’s mechanics, presentation, and studio perspective.
There is a qualification to the praise. Astro Bot draws heavily on PlayStation’s history, and its familiar character cameos are a source of charm. But Park found some levels based on modern third-person action games less successful: camera and action conventions built for those source games do not always translate cleanly into a platformer. The homage can make the adventure feel celebratory, while also tying part of its identity to Sony’s catalogue rather than to wholly new ideas.

How the nominees make the verdict more than a popularity contest
The six nominees span different genres and ambitions, so a GOTY comparison is not a like-for-like technical ranking. A reasonable editorial case for Astro Bot emphasizes the distinctiveness of its moment-to-moment play, the consistency of its craft, and its ability to turn PS5 hardware into part of the fun. Its Best Game Direction win fit that argument; Metaphor: ReFantazio’s Best Narrative win recognized a different strength. Neither category establishes an official formula for GOTY, and the published results do not reveal a scoring rubric or voting margin.
Calling the win “safe” is therefore most accurate as a judgment made after the fact: once Astro Bot had secured direction and accumulated the night’s largest award haul, its GOTY selection made sense. Calling it “deserved” is an argument about the game itself—its inventive level design and expressive controls—rather than a claim that every nominee was weaker on every measure.
