The major change tied to Magic: The Gathering—FINAL FANTASY was a shift in format policy: beginning in 2025, new Universes Beyond sets became legal in every Constructed format, including Standard. The main FIN set was Standard-legal; that did not make every FINAL FANTASY-branded product or card Standard-legal. Released globally on June 13, 2025, the crossover brought characters and material from all 16 mainline FINAL FANTASY games into Magic.
What changed for Magic formats?
Before this policy change, Universes Beyond releases did not automatically enter Standard. Wizards Play Network announced that “Starting in 2025, new Universes Beyond sets will be legal in all Constructed formats—including Standard.” The main FINAL FANTASY set, coded FIN, therefore joined Standard as a regular Standard-legal release. Wizards Play Network’s announcement and the release notes establish that policy and FIN’s legality.
The distinction matters: the release included several card sets and products, not all of which shared FIN’s format status. The FINAL FANTASY Commander (FIC) and Through the Ages (FCA) cards had narrower or existing-card legality. The collecting guide says FIC and FCA cards are legal in Commander, Legacy, and Vintage, while individual reprints may also be legal in formats where those cards were already permitted. Wizards also notes that certain products outside the main set, such as Commander decks and Special Guests, can remain Eternal-legal or follow a reprint’s existing legality. In short, the policy made new Universes Beyond main sets Standard-legal; it did not put every card carrying the crossover’s branding into Standard. Wizards’ collecting guide details the set codes and card treatments.
What was in the FINAL FANTASY crossover?
All 16 mainline games, translated into Magic cards
The set drew on all 16 mainline FINAL FANTASY games, bringing recognizable characters, creatures, items, summons, rivals, and story moments into Magic. Square Enix said the release included characters from every mainline game and more than 100 legendary creature cards across the release. Wizards’ collecting guide separately describes more than 100 legendary creatures when explaining its borderless character-card treatment. Square Enix’s May 2025 announcement explains the crossover’s scope.

Main set and companion products
The FIN main set contained 309 cards. The broader release also included 64 FINAL FANTASY Through the Ages cards, four preconstructed Commander decks themed around FINAL FANTASY VI, VII, X, and XIV, and products including Play Boosters, Collector Boosters, Bundles, a Starter Kit, and Scene Boxes. Wizards’ product page says the Starter Kit includes two ready-to-play decks and a Play Guide. The official product page lists the release’s product range.
Play Boosters could contain FIN and FCA cards; Wizards said cards from those sets opened in Play Boosters could be used in Draft and Sealed for the set. This is a useful distinction for players choosing a product: booster contents did not mean all included cards shared the main set’s format legality.

Some products arrived later. Wizards’ collecting guide documents December 5, 2025 releases including several Scene Boxes, a Chocobo Bundle, and the FINAL FANTASY VII Commander Deck – Game Edition. The Game Edition included the Limit Break Commander deck, a foil Cloud, Midgar Mercenary promo, and a code to redeem the original FINAL FANTASY VII. Wizards said the deck was mechanically identical to its original release and that the Game Edition was English-only. The collecting guide gives those later product details.

The release notes also document a Saga rules update beginning with FINAL FANTASY’s release. A Saga with no chapter abilities is no longer subject to the state-based action that would sacrifice it based on lore counters, and it does not receive the turn-based action that normally adds a lore counter at the start of the first main phase. Wizards explained that the earlier interaction was unintuitive because the maximum chapter number was treated as zero. This rules change is separate from the Universes Beyond format-policy change. The official release notes describe the update.
