Nintendo’s Switch Online Playtest Looked Like an MMO—but Nintendo Never Confirmed One

Nintendo’s 2024 Switch Online playtest was officially described as a feature test. Leaked software hinted at a shared planet-building world, but Nintendo never confirmed an MMO or retail game.

Nintendo described its 2024 Nintendo Switch Online Playtest Program as a test of a new Switch Online feature, not as an MMO. Leaked software text and screenshots reported by Video Games Chronicle showed a collaborative planet-building concept, which explains why coverage compared it to an MMO and Minecraft. That material was not an official product announcement, and it does not establish that Nintendo planned a finished retail game.

What was the Nintendo Switch Online playtest?

Nintendo’s 2024 program invited selected Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members to download exclusive test software connected to a new Switch Online feature. According to the program details reported by Nintendo Life, applicants had to be at least 18 at the specified cutoff, have an active Expansion Pack membership, and be in Japan, the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, or Spain. The listed test window ran from 24 October through 6 November 2024 (UTC).

Nintendo Life reported that 10,000 application spots were available and filled within minutes. That figure is a reported recruitment cap, not a count of people who ultimately took part. The application and test windows for the 2024 program have passed.

Why did reports call it an MMO?

The MMO framing came from leaked software material, not Nintendo’s public description. In its 21 October 2024 report, Video Games Chronicle (VGC) described screenshots and text depicting players cooperating to develop a large planet with creativity and gathered resources. The reported software text said players could “fully develop a massive, expansive planet by utilising creativity and farmed resources” and discover “new lands, enemies and resources” as they progressed.

Nintendo Switch – OLED Model w/White Joy-Con
  • Vivid 7” OLED screen
  • Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
  • 64 GB internal storage (a portion of which is reserved for use by the system)
  • Enhanced audio in handheld and tabletop modes
  • Wide adjustable stand

VGC’s account also described Beacon Zones and a social hub called Dev Core, where players could gather. Those features suggest a shared, evolving world, which is why “MMO” and “Minecraft-like” became useful journalistic shorthand. They do not amount to an official genre label or confirmation that the software was a standalone game. The details remain reports about leaked material, rather than Nintendo’s public account of the feature.

What did Nintendo say about confidentiality?

Selected participants were asked not to discuss or disclose content from the test software or its website. VGC reproduced the participant guidance: “We request that you do not discuss or disclose content from either the Nintendo Switch Online: Playtest Program test software or website with others.” This is a confidentiality request in the participant notice; the cited coverage does not establish its legal status.

Did the playtest return, and can you join now?

Nintendo ran another test of the same service in 2025. GamesRadar reported in July that the program was returning and listed Nintendo Switch 2 among the supported consoles; Nintendo Life’s program coverage also reported a Switch 2 extension that July. The 2025 coverage documents a repeat test, not a public launch or an ongoing signup opportunity.

The sources documenting these tests do not establish the service’s eventual public release or current availability. They also do not show an open application period. The clearest supported conclusion is that Nintendo tested a new Switch Online feature in 2024 and again in 2025, while the public outcome remains unconfirmed in the cited reports.
