Ancient Debris is buried in the Nether, not exposed on the surface. Minecraft’s official guide identifies Y=15 as the level with the highest average chance of finding it, though there is no guarantee. Mine it into Netherite Scrap, then combine four Scrap with four gold ingots to craft one Netherite Ingot.
Where to find Ancient Debris
Ancient Debris generates underground in the Nether and does not generate exposed to air, so you need to dig to find it. Minecraft’s official resource guide describes possible veins between Y=8 and Y=22, and a second possible vein between Y=8 and Y=119 in a chunk. It identifies Y=15 as the level with the highest average chance—not a guaranteed spawn point.
For a practical search, make tunnels around Y=11, 12, or 15, as Minecraft’s Netherite guide recommends. Y=15 is a useful target based on the official average-chance guidance; tunneling at the other listed levels is also an option.
Choose a mining approach
Tunnel mining
Digging tunnels lets you search without deliberately triggering explosions. It wears down your pickaxe as you break blocks, so bring suitable tools and be prepared for a slow search: Ancient Debris is rare.

Bed mining
Beds explode when used in the Nether. Minecraft’s guide suggests digging a tunnel, placing a bed at its end, and using it to expose nearby blocks. Put a solid block between yourself and the bed before triggering the blast; go in with full health, food, and diamond armor. Bed mining can expose blocks faster than wearing through multiple diamond pickaxes, but that is practical guidance, not a measured performance guarantee. It also uses wool and wood and carries blast-injury risk.
Turn Ancient Debris into Netherite Ingots
- Mine Ancient Debris in the Nether.
- Smelt it in a furnace or blast furnace to produce Netherite Scrap.
- Craft an ingot: combine four Netherite Scrap and four gold ingots in a crafting table to make one Netherite Ingot.
This resource chain and recipe are documented in Minecraft’s Java Nether Update instructions and the Bedrock 1.16.0 notes.

Use an ingot to upgrade diamond gear
The official launch-era instructions describe using a Netherite Ingot and diamond equipment at a smithing table. Those sources establish the basic upgrade path, but they do not verify every current-version requirement for every edition. Check the smithing recipe and any required materials in the version you are playing before starting an upgrade; the four-Scrap, four-gold ingot recipe is a separate crafting step.
