These 20 picks span action, strategy, puzzles, and narrative games. Check each Google Play listing for current availability and device support before downloading; neither an award nor an Android release guarantees compatibility with every phone, tablet, or Chromebook.
How to use this 2022 release list
Google Play’s U.S. Best of 2022 awards are useful editorial signposts, not a release-date checklist. The awards covered 20 categories selected by Google Play’s editorial team, including multiplayer, indie, story, ongoing, Play Pass, tablet, and Chromebook categories. Google named Tower of Fantasy Best for Tablets and Roblox Best for Chromebooks, but those labels do not prove that every device offers ideal performance or controls. Google’s announcement explains the U.S. awards and categories.
Annual favorites can also include older games: Genshin Impact, for example, won Best Ongoing, but Droid Gamers explicitly noted that it did not first come out in 2022. Droid Gamers’ staff picks and Pocket Gamer’s review-ranked 2022 roundup are helpful discovery sources, but neither is a complete Android release audit. The selections below are organized by the kind of play they suit; they should be read as recommendations, not as a universal ranking.
Action and competitive games
Apex Legends Mobile
A mobile battle royale for players looking for squad-based competition. It was among Google Play’s 2022 award honorees and Pocket Gamer’s Android-relevant year-end picks. Confirm present-day availability in your region before looking for it in the store.

Diablo Immortal

Its award-year presence should not be mistaken for proof that all players will enjoy its monetization or online features; check its current listing before installing.

Google Play’s game feature page links to listings with details such as in-app purchases and age or content ratings. Those details, prices, availability, and compatibility can change, and may differ by region. Use Google Play’s Best of 2022 page as a starting point, then open each game’s current listing to check its information for your account and device.
- Phone: Check the listing’s compatibility and input expectations for your specific handset. A game appearing in an Android roundup does not establish support for every Android phone.
- Tablet: A tablet award or larger screen can be a useful clue, but it does not certify ideal controls or performance across tablet models.
- Chromebook: Google introduced a Chromebook award category in 2022, but award recognition is not a per-model compatibility check. Confirm that the Play Store listing is available for your Chromebook and that its controls work for you.
- Region and age rating: Availability and store disclosures vary or change. Review the current listing rather than relying on a past award page.
Should you use a controller?
A Bluetooth controller is an optional way to play some Android games, not a requirement for this list. Pocket Gamer’s year-end page included a review of the 8BitDo Ultimate Bluetooth Controller, but that does not verify its compatibility with every Android device or game. Before buying or pairing a controller, check the connection method, whether your device can be mounted comfortably, and whether the specific game supports gamepad input. Touch controls remain the safer assumption unless the game’s current listing or settings say otherwise.
