Sapphire Sport led the round, which GamesBeat said brought Aglet’s total funding since its late-2019 founding to $7 million.
What Aglet’s $4.5 million round funded
GamesBeat reported that Sapphire Sport led the seed round, with participation from existing investors Lakestar Ventures and Forecast Ventures, along with angel investors Matt Miesnieks, Nate Mitchell and Greg Castle. The same report identified Los Angeles and Düsseldorf as company locations and named Ryan Mullins and Owen Batt as Aglet’s founders. GamesBeat’s December 2020 report put the company’s total funding at $7 million since its founding in late 2019.
The round backed a game that treated sneaker collecting as something players did while moving through the real world. Aglet had launched worldwide on April 12, 2020, according to the company’s background page.
How the sneaker game worked
Aglet’s basic loop combined physical activity with digital rewards: players walked, the game tracked their activity, and distance connected to in-game currency and virtual sneaker collecting. The company describes maps, geolocation, activity, sneakers and community as the building blocks of its spatial experience. That makes the “Pokémon Go for sneakers” shorthand understandable, but Aglet’s central hook was the specific link between walking and collecting footwear.

The game’s three-part proposition was:
- Walk in the real world: Location and activity tracking made movement part of play.
- Collect and wear virtual sneakers: Players could build a digital collection and use sneakers within the game.
- Explore fashion commerce: Aglet wanted brands and creators to bring virtual designs into the experience, with the possibility of connections to physical products.
That final element was an ambition, not proof that every virtual item could be purchased as a physical shoe. In GamesBeat’s interview, co-founder and CEO Ryan Mullins said, “Our top-selling brand now is our own Aglet sneakers.” He also described a future in which “Nike and Adidas will release products in the real world, and then they’ll throw these into a game.”

Mullins framed the commerce idea as a response to location-based games that did not, in his view, go far enough toward shopping: “When I played Pokémon Go for the first time in Germany in 2016, I wondered why it wasn’t a commerce experience.” The game’s walking and collecting mechanics were already concrete; making that activity a route into brand commerce was the company’s broader thesis.
Brand collaborations and the Japan plan
In 2020, SGB Media reported that Aglet had announced collaborations with Stadium Goods and Gucci, and covered a November Creator Month collaboration with Dirty Soles. Those are historical reports of partnerships, not confirmation that any of those relationships remain active. SGB Media’s coverage placed the collaborations in the context of the company’s effort to bring sneaker and fashion culture into the game.

In December 2022, LINE Corporation announced that its subsidiary LINE Xenesis and Onlife had signed a memorandum of understanding aimed at developing Aglet for Japan using LINE Blockchain and collaborating with Japanese fashion brands. LINE said Aglet had more than four million global downloads at that time, with Japan accounting for 15% of downloads. The announcement described planned work; it does not establish whether the MOU was completed or whether the initiative is active today. LINE’s announcement is the source for those download figures and plans.

The available dated reports establish Aglet’s 2020 launch, its funding and early metrics, and a Japan development plan announced in 2022. They do not establish the game’s present operating status, current user count, or whether the Japan MOU or earlier collaborations are still active. The historical numbers should therefore be read as snapshots from their reporting dates, not as a description of Aglet today.
