Using Japanese original release dates, the mainline Sonic games run from Sonic the Hedgehog (1991) through Sonic Superstars (2023). “Mainline” has no single official definition, so this guide focuses on Sonic-led action platformers and major entries that continue or mark the series’ central eras; it leaves out racers, sports, party games, compilations and other spin-offs. Sega’s history catalog covers a wider library than this list. Sega’s Sonic Channel history is the reference index for the chronology.
Dates below are Japanese releases unless noted. That distinction matters: the first Sonic game debuted in North America on June 23, 1991, before its Japanese Mega Drive release on July 26. Sega calls June 23 Sonic’s birthday because it was the first release. Sega’s title record lists the regional dates.
All mainline Sonic games in release order
This scoped list includes the major Sonic-led action platformers and saga-continuing entries. It includes Sonic CD as a major 2D platformer, although Sega describes it as a spin-off on the Sonic Origins page; readers applying a stricter definition can omit it. The two 1994 games, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Sonic & Knuckles, were originally released separately and later combined as Sonic 3 & Knuckles in Sonic Origins. Sega’s collection overview explains that relationship and identifies the four games it includes.
| Order | Game | Japanese release date | Place in the series |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Sonic the Hedgehog | July 26, 1991 (Mega Drive) | The original 2D action platformer. Its first release was earlier in North America, on June 23, 1991. |
| 2 | Sonic the Hedgehog 2 | November 21, 1992 | The next main 2D platformer. |
| 3 | Sonic CD | September 23, 1993 | A major 2D platformer included here by editorial choice; Sega classifies it as a spin-off. |
| 4 | Sonic the Hedgehog 3 | May 27, 1994 | The first half of the original two-part release later combined as Sonic 3 & Knuckles. |
| 5 | Sonic & Knuckles | October 18, 1994 | The second half of that two-part release. |
| 6 | Sonic Adventure | December 23, 1998 | The series’ first fully 3D action game, according to Sega. Sega’s game page. |
| 7 | Sonic Adventure 2 | June 23, 2001 | A major follow-up in the 3D era. Sega’s game page. |
| 8 | Sonic Generations | December 1, 2011 | A 20th-anniversary game revisiting earlier adventures. Sega’s game page. |
| 9 | Sonic Superstars | October 17, 2023 | A recent 2D action entry; Sega lists PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch and PC platforms. Sega’s game page. |
Why the release order depends on region
The table uses Japanese release dates for a consistent chronology, not a claim that Japan was always the first region. The original Sonic the Hedgehog launched in North America on June 23, 1991, then in Japan for Mega Drive on July 26; its Game Gear version followed in Japan on December 28, 1991. If you mean “first Sonic game ever released,” use the North American date. If you want a Japan-based series chronology, use July 26 for the Mega Drive game.

How the series’ main eras fit together
Original 2D platformers
The early sequence begins with Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic the Hedgehog 2, followed by Sonic CD and the two-part 1994 release. In Sonic Origins, Sega presents four foundational games: Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic CD, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles. It is a way to play several early games, not a collection of the complete mainline series. Sonic Origins overview.
The move to 3D
Sonic Adventure, dated December 23, 1998 in Japan, marks the shift to fully 3D action in Sega’s account. Sonic Adventure 2 followed on June 23, 2001. These are useful milestones when reading the chronology as a change in format, rather than simply a list of numbered sequels.

Retrospective and return to 2D
Sonic Generations revisited earlier adventures for the franchise’s 20th anniversary and arrived in Japan on December 1, 2011. Sonic Superstars, released in Japan on October 17, 2023, is a more recent 2D action entry.
What order should I play the Sonic games in?
Release order is a sensible option if you want to follow the series’ changing 2D and 3D styles. If your priority is trying several early platformers, Sonic Origins groups four foundational games, but it does not include the full series. For a quick entry point into the 3D era, start with Sonic Adventure; for a recent 2D entry, try Sonic Superstars. These are format-based starting suggestions, not a claim that every game requires the previous one.

Are Sonic games connected?
The games share a continuing franchise and recurring characters, but the scope of this list does not imply that every entry is a direct narrative sequel or that all stories must be played in release order. Choose release order to follow the games’ historical progression; choose by format if you mainly want to play 2D or 3D Sonic.

There is no single official boundary that makes every “mainline” list definitive. This guide uses a practical rule: include principal Sonic-led action platformers and major numbered or saga-continuing entries, while excluding racers, sports, party games, compilations and unrelated spin-offs. Sega’s Sonic Channel history catalogs a broader set of titles; it should not be read as a mainline-only list.
