To play the original Need for Speed: Most Wanted on PC, you need a copy specifically for the 2005 PC release. The substantiated access route is an original retail copy; newer listings for a game with the same name may be for the separate 2012 release. Even with the right copy, legacy SafeDisc DRM can complicate installation on newer Windows versions, so compatibility is not guaranteed.
Make sure you have the 2005 PC game
There are two different games commonly returned for this title: the original 2005 release and a separate Need for Speed: Most Wanted released in 2012. EA’s product page describes the 2012 game, not the original PC release: EA’s Need for Speed: Most Wanted page. A listing for the 2012 game does not show that the 2005 game is available to buy digitally.

Before buying or installing anything, check the listing or packaging for both the year 2005 and the PC platform. The 2005 title has its own entry in PCGamingWiki, which lists retail as an availability route.
Find a legitimate copy
An original retail PC copy is the access route established for the 2005 game. Current stock, seller reliability, and whether a particular used listing is complete or authentic have not been established here. Inspect a seller’s description and photos carefully, and confirm that the item is the PC version rather than a console copy or the 2012 game.

- Electronic Arts 15207 Need for Speed Most Wanted PC
Do not treat a current digital storefront result for the similarly named 2012 release as proof that it includes the 2005 game. The Steam listing surfaced for this title is also for the later game: Steam’s Need for Speed: Most Wanted listing.
Check compatibility before troubleshooting
The original game uses SafeDisc, a legacy DRM system. PCGamingWiki’s compatibility notes warn that SafeDisc may not work on Windows Vista and later; that warning identifies a potential obstacle, not proof that every installation on a modern Windows PC will fail. See the game-specific SafeDisc compatibility notes before attempting installation.

Community compatibility fixes are documented, but they are not an EA guarantee, and success with a particular fix on your Windows build has not been established. Do not assume that administrator mode, compatibility mode, a no-CD patch, or an unofficial download is a verified or endorsed solution. Use reputable, game-specific documentation for your own operating system, and avoid downloads from sources you cannot trust.

Compatibility advice depends on the exact setup. Have these details ready when checking documentation or asking for troubleshooting help:
Recommended Free Tools
- Whether you own an original 2005 PC copy, and what installation media or files it includes.
- Your Windows version and build.
- The exact point where installation or launch fails, including any error message.
Without those details, there is no single installation workaround that can be responsibly recommended for every PC. The cited sources do not establish that a new computer, controller, or generic utility is required.
