Before sending Cassian on a mission, Luthen gives him a kyber necklace. James Whitbrook’s September 28, 2022, Gizmodo/io9 article quotes Luthen describing it as “Blue kyber. Sky stone. The ancient world,” then saying it “celebrates the uprising against the Rakatan invaders.” The line connects the necklace to a conflict involving the Rakata, rather than explaining that history in detail.

Who are the Rakata in KOTOR lore?
Whitbrook traces the Rakata to BioWare’s 2003 game Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. In the game lore as summarized in his article, they were a technologically advanced species whose connection to the Force helped power the Infinite Empire. The Star Forge, a machine capable of producing fleets and droid armies, is central to KOTOR’s story.

Those details provide context for why the name carries weight for longtime fans, but they are not established by Luthen’s brief line alone. The game that introduced the Rakata is Knights of the Old Republic; no specific edition, platform, or current availability is established here.
How old is Rakata history in Star Wars?
The dates are fictional chronology, not real-world measurements. Whitbrook’s article places KOTOR about 4,000 years before the Star Wars films, the Rakata almost 30,000 years before that game’s setting, and a plague that weakened them around 25,000 years before the films. These are approximate dates as reported in the 2022 article, not dates supplied by the scene in Andor.

Is this the Rakata’s first appearance in Disney-era canon?
Whitbrook describes the line as potentially the first explicit on-screen mention of the Rakata in Disney-era canon, while noting earlier peripheral references: Rakata Prime on a map in The Force Awakens visual guide, a Rakatan Wraith Box described in the Solo visual guide, and an Infinite Empire symbol in Star Wars Rebels. That distinction and the canon characterization are the article’s account; they were not independently confirmed against official references.

Nothing in the line, as discussed by Whitbrook, establishes a Rakata appearance or a consequential new plot thread. Its significance is primarily lore: it suggests a long history behind Luthen’s necklace and rewards viewers familiar with KOTOR. It does not show that Andor is adapting the game’s story.
