Bedrock Edition does not use Java shader packs; check whether your platform supports Minecraft’s Vibrant Visuals and use a compatible resource pack instead.
Check whether you have Java or Bedrock
The editions use different rendering systems and files. Microsoft explains that Java can create custom GLSL shaders, while Bedrock cannot. A shader pack made for Java will not work as a Bedrock resource pack. See Microsoft’s Java and Bedrock comparison.

- Java Edition: follow the loader-and-shader-pack steps below. This route is for Java Edition on PC.
- Bedrock Edition: check for Vibrant Visuals and compatible resource packs; do not put a Java shader ZIP into Bedrock.
Download and install shaders for Java Edition
For Java, install a compatible shader loader first, then add a pack. Iris is one option; OptiFine is another. Before downloading anything, check that the loader and the shader pack both support the exact Minecraft version you plan to launch.
- Confirm your game version. Note the Minecraft Java version shown in the launcher and use that same version when choosing the loader profile.
- Install a shader loader. Use the loader’s official project page and follow its current version instructions. Iris’s documented standalone installer route uses a universal JAR and requires Java to run. Its guide covers choosing a Minecraft version during installation: Iris installation guide.
- Download a shader pack from its project page. Read the pack’s edition and version notes before downloading. For example, BSL Shaders’ project page identifies the pack as Java-only and directs users to install Iris or OptiFine first. Use the project’s own download page rather than an unofficial mirror.
- Add the pack. Keep the downloaded pack as a ZIP unless its instructions say otherwise. Open Minecraft’s shader-pack screen and use its folder or add-pack option, or place the ZIP in
.minecraft/shaderpacks. The BSL instructions specify this folder. - Enable it in game. Launch the matching Minecraft profile, open the video or shader settings, and select the pack. BSL’s stated path is Options → Video Settings → Shaders.
If the pack is missing or fails to load, check the edition, selected game version, loader version, and pack compatibility before trying a different download. Support changes as Minecraft and its mods are updated; there is no single compatibility list covering every loader and pack.

What to do if you play Bedrock Edition
Bedrock’s current native alternative is Vibrant Visuals, a rendering feature built around a physically based rendering (PBR) pipeline. Availability depends on the platform and game build, so first check Minecraft’s graphics settings and official platform information. Bedrock uses compatible resource packs rather than Java’s shader-loader workflow.
For creators, Microsoft’s Vibrant Visuals documentation specifies that a compatible resource pack needs the pbr capability and a min_engine_version of 1, 21, 120 or higher. These are pack requirements, not instructions to install a Java shader ZIP. See Microsoft’s Vibrant Visuals resource-pack documentation.

To activate an available Bedrock resource pack for a world, select the world and open its Resource Packs area in the world settings, then activate the pack. The interface and available packs can vary by platform; Microsoft’s resource-pack instructions describe the activation workflow.
Preview and beta instructions are not general requirements
Microsoft’s deferred-rendering technical-preview guidance applies to compatible preview or beta builds and has preview-specific requirements. For example, its Android guidance for that preview rendering mode calls for GLES 3.1 and Android OS 9 or newer. Do not treat those details as requirements for every Bedrock release or device. Check the deferred-rendering preview documentation only if you are intentionally using that preview.
