In Pokémon Legends: Z-A, you can get Metal Coats as rewards from Side Missions 101 and 114, or buy one after the story from a vendor at Racine Construction for 4,980 Pokédollars. Side Mission 114 is a late-game option associated with Rank A; check the NPC at the entrance to Wild Zone 17.
Metal Coat locations and how to get one
Guides report three ways to obtain a Metal Coat. The two mission rewards do not require the postgame purchase, while the vendor route is reported as repeatable.
| Route | When and where | Cost or availability |
|---|---|---|
| Side Mission 101: Steadfast as Steel | Complete the mission to receive a Metal Coat. | Mission reward; no Pokédollar price stated. PowerPyx and All Things How report this route. |
| Side Mission 114: A Feather from Skarmory | Late game, around Rank A. Check the NPC in front of Wild Zone 17 in Vert Sector 7. | Mission reward; no Pokédollar price stated. Guides differ on the exact unlock timing, so an earlier specific point is not established. PowerPyx and All Things How report this route. |
| Racine Construction vendor | After completing the story, look in the garage or back area of Racine Construction. | 4,980 Pokédollars per Metal Coat. All Things How reports unlimited stock; PowerPyx confirms the price and post-story requirement but does not state a stock limit. All Things How and PowerPyx report this route. |
How to unlock Side Mission 114
Side Mission 114 is a late-game route associated with reaching Rank A. PowerPyx says it becomes available after Main Mission 35: Reaching Rank A. All Things How places it around the endgame and says it may appear after the credits or very near the end. Because the guides differ, treat Rank A and the Wild Zone 17 entrance as a cue to check for the mission rather than a guaranteed exact unlock moment.
- Progress through the story to the late game and reach Rank A.
- Go to the entrance of Wild Zone 17 in Vert Sector 7.
- Check for the NPC who offers “A Feather from Skarmory.” Complete the mission for its Metal Coat reward.
Which route should you choose?
- Want a mission reward? Complete Side Mission 101, and check for Side Mission 114 once you are around Rank A.
- Need another after the story? Buy one at Racine Construction for 4,980 Pokédollars. All Things How reports that the vendor has unlimited stock.
- Planning to evolve a Pokémon? Have a trade partner or suitable trading arrangement ready before using a mission reward, since the evolution requires a trade.
What Metal Coat does
Give Metal Coat to the Pokémon as a held item, then trade it. Scyther evolves into Scizor, and Onix evolves into Steelix. These uses and trade requirements are reported by PowerPyx and All Things How. The official Pokémon Legends: Z-A overview notes generally that some Pokémon evolve through methods other than leveling, but does not specify Metal Coat locations or its trade rules.
