Steam does not have one universal link that sends someone straight into any game lobby. A Steam invite link adds someone as a friend; to join a particular session, use the game’s own invite or a Steam Overlay invite if that game supports it.
Steam friend links and game-lobby invites are different

How to create a Steam friend invite link
On desktop
- Open Friends & Chat in the Steam client.
- Open the friend-management or add-friend controls.
- Choose the option to create an invite link, then share the generated link.
Steam’s Friends & Chat FAQ confirms the link can be created and shared from friend management. The exact menu wording or placement may change. This link is for connecting as friends, not a direct lobby link.

On Steam Mobile
- Open Steam Mobile Chat and tap the menu at the top left.
- Select Add a Friend, then Invite Link.
- Generate the link and send it by text, email, or another channel.
The mobile route is documented in Steam’s Steam Mobile Chat instructions. It creates a friend invite link, not a link that necessarily joins a game.
How to invite someone into a game lobby
- Open the game and use its own invite, party, or join controls, following the options that title provides.
- If the game supports Steam Overlay invites, open the overlay with Shift+Tab by default and send a game invite from there.
- Have the other player accept the invitation through the game or Steam, as applicable.
Steam says the Overlay can provide friend, game, and group invites, but developers can implement its features differently. The shortcut works only when the Overlay is enabled and the game supports it. Consult that game’s menus or official help for its exact lobby-joining process; the friend-link steps above do not substitute for it. See Steam Community Overlay.

If you cannot create or use an invite
- You cannot send a regular friend invite: Limited accounts cannot send ordinary friend invites, but can accept invitations and use Quick Invite links. Steam Support says qualifying spending of at least US$5 removes limited-account restrictions; what counts as qualifying spending is subject to Steam’s account rules. Check Steam’s Limited User Accounts page for the current policy.
- A friend request will not go through: Check for a pending invite, a block, or whether either account has reached its friend limit. Steam lists these as possible causes in its friend-invite guidance.
- A game invite is missing: Confirm the Steam Overlay is enabled and supported by the specific title. Overlay behavior varies by game.
- You appear offline: Steam’s Friends & Chat presence controls affect online community features. Check your presence setting if an invitation or friend interaction depends on being online.
Check a Steam link before signing in
Be cautious with unexpected links, even if they appear to come from a friend: Steam warns that a friend’s account may be compromised. Do not enter your password on an unfamiliar page. Steam identifies steampowered.com, store.steampowered.com, steamcommunity.com, and help.steampowered.com as official Steam login domains. See Steam’s Account Security Recommendations.
