Use skills as you play, then sleep when the bronze logo appears at the top-right of the screen. That completes the level-up and lets you spend 12 Virtue Points on attributes. Minor Skills count toward character progress too, though Major Skills contribute faster.
How to level up
- Use skills. Skills improve through their associated actions. Bethesda says both Major and Minor Skills contribute to character-level progress, with Major Skills contributing faster. Higher skill levels also yield more experience. Examples include using a blade in combat, making potions with Alchemy, or moving unseen with Sneak. Bethesda does not publish an exact XP threshold or formula.
- Watch for the bronze logo. When enough skill progress has accumulated, a bronze logo appears at the top-right of the screen. This means a level-up is ready.
- Find a bed and sleep. The level-up is not completed until you sleep. If you have earned progress for multiple levels without sleeping, Bethesda says you can level up several times in a row.
- Spend your Virtue Points. Each level awards 12 points for attributes. You can put up to five points into one attribute and increase up to three different attributes per level.
Which skills should you use?
Choose activities that fit your play style, but keep your character effective across the challenges you face. Bethesda warns that enemies scale with player level; raising a non-combat skill such as Mercantile rapidly without advancing combat abilities can leave you underpowered in fights. Its guidance is to develop a mix of combat, magic, and stealth skills rather than focus only on easy skill progress.
Combat skills
Combat skills include Blade, Block, and Heavy Armor. Use the weapons and defenses that support your preferred approach to keep those abilities progressing.
Magic skills
Alchemy, Destruction, and Restoration are among the listed magic skills. Alchemy improves through making potions and poisons. Bethesda’s official tips note that Magicka regenerates and that some spells can be cast repeatedly or without a target, allowing those skills to improve when you have Magicka available. These are examples, not a documented fastest-leveling strategy.

Stealth and exploration skills
Skills such as Sneak, Marksman, and Security improve through their associated actions: moving unseen, using ranged weapons, and dealing with locks and traps. Running and jumping also improve Athletics and Acrobatics, so exploration can advance skills as you travel. In Bethesda’s April 22, 2025 beginner guide, Virtuos lead software engineer Alexandre Lecomte specifically recommends jumping while exploring to raise Acrobatics.
Major Skills and Minor Skills: do both count?

You do not need to avoid Minor Skills to prevent them from counting: Bethesda’s Remastered-specific guidance says both categories add to character progress. The sources do not provide a numerical difference in their contribution rates.

How to spend Virtue Points
Each level gives 12 Virtue Points. You may assign up to five to one attribute and distribute points across no more than three attributes in that level. Bethesda’s brief descriptions can help match choices to your build:
- Strength: affects melee damage and carrying capacity.
- Intelligence: affects total Magicka.
- Willpower: affects Magicka regeneration and magic resistance.
- Agility: affects dodging and ranged accuracy.
- Speed: affects movement speed.
- Endurance: affects health and fatigue recovery.
- Personality: affects NPC reactions and persuasion.
- Luck: has subtler effects.
There is no universal allocation prescribed in Bethesda’s guidance. Choose attributes that address what your character needs and how you play.

Why am I not leveling up?
- No bronze logo yet: Keep using skills. Bethesda does not publish an exact progress threshold, so there is no stated number of skill increases to target.
- The logo appeared, but no level-up happened: Find a bed and sleep; sleeping is required to complete the level-up.
- You are gaining levels but struggling in combat: Enemies scale with your character level. Continue developing combat abilities alongside magic, stealth, or other skills you are raising.
