The update brought combat into Super Earth colony streets and introduced the Fast Recon Vehicle (FRV). It also set the Voteless—citizens described by the launch announcement as mind-controlled and transformed—against Helldivers.
When did the Illuminate arrive in Helldivers 2?
Omens of Tyranny went live on December 12, 2024. In the launch announcement, Katherine Baskin, Social Media and Community Manager at Arrowhead Game Studios, presented it as a major update marking the Illuminate’s return.

The announcement said the faction had been absent for nearly a century and had returned with advanced technology. It also said the Illuminate’s true origin and purpose were unknown at the time. Those details are the launch post’s story framing, not an independent account of the faction’s history or a guarantee about later lore.
What changed in Omens of Tyranny?
Fighting moved into Super Earth colonies
The update added mission areas inside Super Earth colonies. Instead of the broad, open battle spaces players were accustomed to, these missions bring combat into tighter streets, dark alleys, and branching routes. Arrowhead echoed the shift in its December 17, 2024 version 01.002.001 notes.

That change affects how a mission is read: corners and alleys can compress encounters, while branching streets offer more than one route through an area. The launch announcement’s description establishes the urban layout, but it does not provide a universal tactical guide or guarantee a particular route or encounter in every mission.
The Fast Recon Vehicle joined the fight
The FRV is a squad-carrying reconnaissance and combat vehicle. The official launch description highlights its manual transmission and says passengers can fire from the windows. It described the vehicle as appearing in colony missions and linked access to following Major Orders.

That unlock description is specific to the December 2024 launch announcement; it should not be taken as confirmation of the current unlock process. Check the game’s current Major Orders and in-game guidance for present access details.
Who are the Voteless?
The launch post describes the Voteless as Super Earth citizens abducted, brainwashed, and transformed by the Illuminate. Because this account appears in the game’s in-universe framing, attribute it to the official announcement rather than treating it as neutral, independently verified exposition. The post left the Illuminate’s origin and purpose unresolved at launch.

Is Urban Legends part of Omens of Tyranny?
No. Omens of Tyranny is the update featuring the Illuminate’s return, colony missions, and the FRV. Urban Legends is a separate Premium Warbond announced on December 13, 2024. Its announcement lists close-quarters equipment including the SQC-19 Stun Lance, Flame Sentry, Anti-Tank Emplacement, armor options, and other items.
PlayStation’s Urban Legends announcement says the Warbond requires the base game, paid Super Credits, and game progression. It is related to the urban-combat setting, but it is not the same thing as the core update.
What do the later patch notes tell players?
Arrowhead’s version 01.002.001 notes, dated December 17, 2024, recap the update and record subsequent balance and gameplay changes. Those details describe that particular patch version; they should not be presented as current balance values without checking newer game information.
