Halo: Campaign Evolved is a released remake of Halo: Combat Evolved’s campaign, not a remake of the original game’s entire package. It rebuilds the original ten missions, adds three prequel missions and modernized combat, and supports up to four-player online co-op. Halo Studios says it aimed to preserve the original’s atmosphere while updating pacing and clarity. Whether the changes actually achieve that is still a question for independent reviews and platform testing—not something the feature list can settle.
What changed in Halo: Campaign Evolved?
The Xbox product listing describes a ground-up, modernized remake of the ten-mission campaign, with updated visuals and cinematics, refined pacing and wayfinding, and modernized gameplay. The official Halo announcement also highlights high-definition graphics, enhanced cinematics, and rebuilt sound design. These are the publishers’ descriptions of the game; they do not, by themselves, establish how the remake looks or feels in play. Xbox’s product page and Halo’s launch announcement list the features.
Three prequel missions and more combat options
The new Operation: METEORITE missions feature Master Chief and Sgt. Johnson before the events of Halo: Combat Evolved. The Xbox listing also specifies nine additional weapons drawn from across the series, new enemy types and variants, vehicle hijacking, and the ability to pilot a Covenant Wraith. Those additions change the campaign’s available tools and encounters, though the published feature list does not show how well each fits the original mission design.
Skulls and Campaign Remix
The remake includes 42 Skulls and a mode called Campaign Remix. These are official replay and challenge features, but their presence alone does not tell us whether they make repeat runs substantially different or more satisfying.

What is Halo Studios trying to preserve?
In an October 2025 Xbox Wire interview, Halo Studios described the project as a complete Unreal Engine 5 remake with remastered 4K visuals, updated animations, music, and voice lines. Executive producer Damon Conn said the team wanted to capture the original campaign’s “atmosphere, tone – the emotional impact” while making it a starting point for people new to the story. Creative director Max Szlagor said the team rebuilt levels and encounters with more fidelity, while considering how they would scale for four-player co-op. These are stated goals, not independent confirmation that the remake preserves the original’s feel.
The interview also says the team revised some spaces, including The Library, for pacing and clarity. That raises a useful question: will those changes make the campaign easier to follow without losing the disorientation or tension that some players associate with its original design? The official material explains the intent, but only a close comparison and independent play can answer how the revisions land. Xbox Wire’s interview with the developers gives their account of those decisions.

Does it have co-op and split-screen?
Yes. The Xbox product page lists up to four-player online co-op with cross-play and cross-progression, plus two-player split-screen on consoles. For split-screen, each player must sign in to their own account profile. The official listing does not establish that every platform version has identical features, so check the details for the version you plan to play.
- Solo: Play the campaign alone.
- Local co-op: Two-player split-screen on consoles.
- Online co-op: Up to four players, with cross-play and cross-progression.
Co-op is more than an added menu option: Halo Studios says it considered how encounters and spaces would accommodate four players. Whether that redesign preserves the feel and balance of the solo campaign remains a point for independent assessment.

Where can you play it, and how can you get it?
Halo: Campaign Evolved launched globally on July 28, 2026. The official Halo site lists Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Steam. Xbox’s product page covers Xbox Series X|S and Windows PC and lists the game as included with Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass. Xbox also says Xbox Play Anywhere supports play on Xbox console and PC with shared progress. Subscription terms and availability can change, so check your regional store before subscribing or buying.
Halo Support says physical editions are available through select retailers worldwide, alongside digital storefronts. The Collector’s Edition announcement listed Xbox and PS5 discs, but the Steam version comes with a code rather than a disc. Its announced price was $199.99 SRP / €199.99; that is the price at announcement, not a verified current price. The announced contents included Premium Edition items, a 12-inch Dark Horse Master Chief statue, a light-up LED Cortana chip, a Steelbook, three concept art prints, and a physical reimagined manual. Check current regional listings for availability, pricing, and exact edition contents. Xbox Wire’s launch and editions announcement lists the Collector’s Edition details.

The official feature list makes clear what was added, and the developer interview explains what the team says it intended. Neither settles the central judgment: does the remake retain the atmosphere and distinctive level design of the original while improving readability and adapting it for co-op?

- How do the visual and sound changes affect the original atmosphere? The official pages describe updated presentation, but the available material does not provide independent comparisons.
- Do revised pacing and wayfinding help without flattening the levels? The Library is one example of a space revised for clarity, but the developers’ reasoning is not a substitute for seeing how it plays.
- How does performance differ by platform? The official platform list does not establish comparative performance, technical quality, or feature parity among versions.
- Does four-player co-op work well with encounters designed around the campaign? The studio says it considered scaling spaces and encounters; independent play is needed to judge the result.
The official material reviewed also does not establish a complete post-launch roadmap. Avoid treating unconfirmed future-content claims as part of what the game currently includes.
What the evidence can—and cannot—say
The confirmed scope is substantial: ten remade missions, three new prequel missions, additional weapons and enemies, vehicle features, Skulls, Campaign Remix, and expanded co-op. That is enough to distinguish Campaign Evolved from a simple visual refresh. It is not enough to conclude that the remake improves on Combat Evolved, preserves its mood, or performs consistently across platforms. Those are judgments that need independent reviews and technical reporting.
