In Minecraft Java Edition, villagers have a five-minute cooldown after a successful breeding attempt. That is not a guaranteed five-minute wait from feeding: villagers must also be willing and have an available, reachable bed before another baby can appear. The available sources do not establish the equivalent cooldown for Bedrock Edition.
When does the five-minute timer start?
The Minecraft Wiki’s villager mechanics reference reports a cooldown of five minutes, or 6,000 game ticks, after successful breeding in Java Edition: Villager mechanics. It is a post-success cooldown for the parents, not a countdown that begins when you hand them food.

There is no fixed time from feeding to the first baby in the cited guidance. Food makes villagers willing, but a successful breeding event also requires an available bed the relevant villager can reach.
What villagers need to breed
Enough food to become willing
The mechanics reference lists these food thresholds for each villager:

An available, reachable bed
The basic tutorial setup uses two adult villagers and three beds: two for the adults and one spare for the baby. The Minecraft tutorial describes this setup and the bed requirement: Minecraft: Villager. A bed that is missing or cannot be reached can prevent breeding even if the villagers have food.
Why aren’t my villagers breeding?
Check the requirements in this order rather than assuming the cooldown is the only issue:

- Confirm food: Give each villager 3 bread or 12 carrots, potatoes, or beetroots so they can become willing.
- Check the beds: Make sure there is an unclaimed bed for the baby and that the relevant villager can reach it. The simple setup is two adults and three beds.
- Wait after a successful birth: In Java Edition, the parents need five minutes after a successful breeding event before they can breed successfully again.
Waiting alone will not fix insufficient food or a bed problem.
Does the timing differ between Java and Bedrock?
The five-minute figure is supported for Java Edition. Do not assume it also applies to Bedrock: the available sources do not state Bedrock’s corresponding breeding cooldown. Mojang’s Java 1.14 notes say village detection changed to use “beds, job sites, and meeting points instead of doors,” but that historical change does not specify a breeding interval: Minecraft Java Edition 1.14.

The latest surfaced Java release notes, for version 26.3, mention a villager food component but do not document a changed breeding interval: Minecraft Java Edition 26.3. That does not establish a Bedrock value or a separate first-baby timer.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How strong is the five-minute figure?
The precise cooldown and food thresholds come from the community-maintained Minecraft Wiki, not official Mojang documentation. The Minecraft tutorial provides supporting guidance for the basic bed setup. Mojang’s cited material gives village and version context but does not confirm the five-minute interval or state Bedrock’s timer. Treat the figure as a Java mechanics reference rather than a claim about both editions.
