The Maw is a zone from World of Warcraft: Shadowlands, not a Dragonflight zone. To enter it, start the Shadowlands introduction with “Shadowlands: A Chilling Summons” from Highlord Darion Mograine in Stormwind or Orgrimmar, then follow the quests through the Maw to Oribos. Eligible alternate characters may be able to skip that introduction.
Start the Shadowlands introduction
- Find Highlord Darion Mograine in Stormwind or Orgrimmar and accept “Shadowlands: A Chilling Summons.” This begins the Shadowlands introductory questline. Warcraft Wiki quest details
- Follow the questline into the Maw and onward to Oribos. Completing the initial Maw storyline awards the “Into the Maw” achievement, according to the Warcraft Wiki.
Enter the Maw from Oribos
After reaching Oribos, use the Soul Pillar on the second level to travel to the Maw. If the pit or entrance returns you to the upper ring instead, check your quest log and continue the introduction: your character may not yet be at the quest step that enables access. The entrance location is described by the Warcraft Wiki’s Maw page; a Blizzard-hosted player discussion also reports that quest progress can affect the route.
Skip the introduction on an eligible alternate character
On an eligible alt, accept “Shadowlands: A Chilling Summons,” then speak to the NPC in your capital city and choose the dialogue option to skip the Maw introduction:
- Stormwind: High Inquisitor Whitemane.
- Orgrimmar: Nazgrim.
The Warcraft Wiki’s historical eligibility note says the account needed a level-60 character that had completed the Maw introduction. Exact eligibility and live dialogue can change with game updates, so check the NPC conversation in game if the skip option is absent. Warcraft Wiki quest details Warcraft Wiki campaign details

What Dragonflight has to do with it
Nothing in Dragonflight progression unlocks the Maw: the zone belongs to Shadowlands. Blizzard’s Dragonflight expansion information covers Dragon Isles content, while the Maw is part of the earlier expansion. Access to the zone is an in-game quest or eligible skip, not a physical item or separate unlock purchase. Blizzard’s starter guide explains game access and trial or subscription options.

Entering the Maw does not necessarily complete separate requirements for Torghast, raid entrances, mounting, or other Shadowlands activities. Player reports describe additional quest prerequisites for some of these, but there is no established single current checklist covering all of them. Check the specific activity’s requirements and your character’s quest state.
