Baldur’s Gate 3 runs on Larian Studios’ Divinity 4.0 engine. DirectX 11 and Vulkan are graphics APIs the Windows version can use; they are not the game engine. Larian lists DirectX 11 as the default and Vulkan as an alternative.
What is Baldur’s Gate 3’s engine?
Larian identifies the engine as Divinity 4.0 in its General Information FAQ, stating: “Baldur’s Gate 3 has been built using the new Divinity 4.0 engine.” The studio’s name for the engine is the direct answer; it is distinct from the game’s rules and graphics API.
Is Baldur’s Gate 3 a DirectX 11 or Vulkan game?
On Windows, Larian lists DirectX 11 as the default graphics API and also provides Vulkan 1.1. These are interfaces the game uses to communicate with graphics hardware, not competing engine names. The game remains built on Divinity 4.0 whichever of the two APIs is selected.
Which API should you choose?
Larian says Vulkan may be faster in most cases, but may also be slightly less stable than DirectX 11. That is qualified developer guidance, not a guarantee or a controlled benchmark for every PC. If you are comparing the launch options, judge performance and stability on your own hardware and drivers rather than assuming one will always be better. Larian’s explanation is in its support index.

What rules and requirements does the game use?
The game uses Dungeons & Dragons fifth-edition rules, according to Larian’s FAQ. That describes its tabletop rules basis, not its software engine.

No. Larian’s official modding toolkit is a separate PC download, not another name for Divinity 4.0. Larian says Patch 7 introduced the in-game Mod Manager and toolkit for PC players, downloadable on Steam. The toolkit requires 160 GB of free space, lists Windows 10 64-bit in its recommended specifications, and is unavailable on console and Mac.
