Black Myth: Wukong can match God of War for mythic spectacle, but spectacle alone does not make the same kind of action-adventure. Its staff-focused combat, punishing boss fights and story steeped in a classic Chinese novel may leave players who prize Kratos’s character-driven journey wanting more. That is a matter of what you value—not proof that one game is objectively better.
What kind of game is Black Myth: Wukong?
Black Myth: Wukong is an action RPG rooted in Chinese mythology and based on Journey to the West, one of China’s Four Great Classical Novels. PM Studios, publisher of the PS5 physical edition, describes the player character as the Destined One. It is not a God of War installment or retelling; the games draw on different mythological traditions and tell different stories. PM Studios’ game page describes its premise and setting.

The Xbox product description, attributed to publisher Game Science, highlights staff techniques, spells, abilities, weapons, equipment and transformations as ways to develop a combat style. It also points to varied foes and stories behind the characters. That feature list suggests a combat experience built around assembling tools and adapting to encounters, rather than a direct copy of Kratos’s style. Xbox’s product description gives the official feature summary.
Where Wukong measures up to God of War
Visual spectacle and mythic worlds
There is a strong case for Wukong if what you want is a lavish journey through a mythic world. TIME praised its detailed forests, temples and mountains, as well as its imaginative interpretation of mythological beings. That is a critic’s assessment of the art direction, not a technical benchmark or a claim that every player will prefer its visuals. TIME also compared the game’s mythological imagination with God of War. TIME’s 2024 review makes that comparison.

A distinct source of myth
Wukong draws on a Chinese literary and religious tradition rather than Nordic or Greek mythology. That gives it a different cast of creatures, legends and cultural references—not merely a new setting for Kratos-style action. If you are curious about Journey to the West, the game’s premise and world are attractions in their own right, even if its storytelling does not land for everyone.
Why it may not deliver the God of War experience
Combat challenge and rhythm
TIME described the combat as challenging and at points punishing. Boss encounters that demand repeated attempts can be exciting for players who enjoy learning patterns and refining their approach; they can also interrupt the forward momentum that makes a character-led action adventure satisfying. That is one critic’s experience, and tolerance for difficult fights varies. It does not establish that Wukong is universally harder or less enjoyable than either God of War.

The official feature descriptions emphasize staff combat alongside spells, abilities, transformations and equipment. Players seeking Kratos’s particular combination of weapon feel, character presence and set-piece pacing should not assume those qualities will transfer simply because both games involve mythological heroes fighting formidable foes.
Story clarity and character connection
TIME noted that players unfamiliar with Journey to the West may find parts of Wukong’s narrative difficult to follow, while also pointing out that the game supplies details and a glossary. The practical distinction is that a glossary can help explain names and references, but it is not the same as a story being immediately legible to a newcomer. If you want a clear, emotionally centered journey anchored in Kratos and his relationships, this is a meaningful point of difference.

So, is Black Myth: Wukong like God of War?
They are comparable as high-profile myth-inspired action games, but the resemblance has limits. Use the qualities you care about most to decide whether Wukong is likely to satisfy you:
| What you value | What the evidence suggests about Wukong | What that means for the comparison |
|---|---|---|
| Visual world-building | TIME praised detailed environments and mythological imagination. | A strong reason to try it if spectacle and a distinctive mythic setting matter most. |
| Combat challenge | TIME characterized combat as challenging and sometimes punishing; the official description highlights staff techniques, spells, abilities and equipment. | Potentially rewarding if you like adapting to difficult encounters; potentially frustrating if repeated boss attempts disrupt your preferred pace. |
| Narrative accessibility | TIME said some players unfamiliar with Journey to the West may struggle, while noting the game provides details and a glossary. | Consider how much you want a story to explain its mythic context as you go. |
| Kratos’s character and journey | The sources establish that Wukong has its own protagonist, setting and story; they do not establish an objective winner on character or narrative. | Choose based on which protagonist and style of storytelling you want to spend time with. |
There is no objective verdict that one franchise wins every category. PlayStation identifies God of War Ragnarök as a 2022 installment and lists both that game and the 2018 God of War for PlayStation and PC. PlayStation’s Ragnarök page confirms the installment and platforms, while its 2018 game page lists that game’s availability.
