It is an editorial selection from FM Scout’s 104-player striker section—not an official or universal top-25 ranking—and a high in-game potential rating is not a promise of real-world success.
What “wonderkid” means in FM17
FM Scout defines a wonderkid as a player with potential ability (PA) of at least 150 who was no older than 20 on July 1, 2016 in-game. Its guide also includes late bloomers and assigns a personal development recommendation score. That score is FM Scout’s own assessment, not a universal measure of ability or a guarantee of how a player will develop in your save. FM Scout’s FM17 wonderkids guide includes the striker data used for this selection.

This is a practical shortlist, not a claim that these are the only worthwhile young forwards in FM17. For comparison, Football Manager Blog published its own 2016 top ten, headed by Zé Gomes, then Johannes Eggestein and Kuki; that earlier list is one publisher’s ranking and differs from the later FM Scout database revision. How to choose a striker for your save
Start with your tactic and budget rather than treating a potential rating or list position as a signing recommendation. Compare what the player can contribute now with the development ceiling, then check whether the player’s role and cost suit your squad.
- Current ability and readiness: Decide whether you need a starter immediately or can give a younger forward minutes over time. A high potential alone does not establish readiness for your level.
- Potential and development assessment: Treat PA and publisher recommendation scores as different things. FM Scout’s personal recommendation score reflects its own view of development; Football Manager Story says its wider shortlist of 217 wonderkids was rated on potential alone and did not account for current ability. Do not compare those assessments as if they were the same scale. Football Manager Story’s FM17 shortlist.
- Age and minutes: Consider how much first-team playing time you can realistically provide and whether the player fits your squad plan. The FM Scout wonderkid age cutoff is tied to July 1, 2016 in-game, not to a present-day age.
- Cost in your save: Check the in-game asking price, wages, contract situation, and competition for the player. The list does not establish a reliable acquisition cost for every career, and historical FM17 values should not be read as current market facts.
- Role flexibility: Inspect the player’s attributes and preferred roles in your own save. A forward who can cover another attacking position may fit your squad better than a specialist, depending on your formation.
Why a name may be missing from your game
Availability can depend on database and save setup. Football Manager Story says its full 217-player shortlist requires a large database with England, France, Italy, Spain, Argentina, and Brazil loaded as playable. That condition concerns its broader shortlist; it does not prove every player on the FM Scout striker selection will appear in every save. Potential can also vary: FM Scout notes that many players have negative PA values, so their exact potential is not fixed like a set numeric value.
Rank #2
These ratings and recommendations describe FM17’s in-game database, not current scouting advice or an assessment of how the players’ real careers turned out. Treat the list as a starting point for scouting within the relevant game version and save.
