For a child who enjoys building and exploring, Minecraft is one option to consider; for a child drawn to farming and town life, Stardew Valley offers a different kind of play. Neither is automatically right for every child: check the age rating and content descriptors for your region, then review online play and spending settings before buying or enabling multiplayer.
Two PC games with different kinds of play
| Game | Play style | Rating and descriptors | Online and spending details | What parents should review |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Minecraft | Building and exploration, with Creative and Survival modes. | ESRB E10+ (Everyone 10+) with Fantasy Violence. The official parent guide also reports PEGI 7. Ratings vary by region; check the current local listing. | ESRB identifies optional interactive online communication and in-game purchases. The official parent guide says multiplayer is off by default on child accounts. | Server choice, multiplayer access, chat, friend requests and purchase permissions. |
| Stardew Valley | Farming and life simulation: develop a farm and interact with a town. | Steam lists ESRB E10+ with Fantasy Violence, Mild Blood, Mild Language, Use of Alcohol and Tobacco, and Simulated Gambling. | Steam lists single-player and co-op. The cited listing does not state whether in-game purchases are available. | Consider whether the descriptors suit your child and review co-op settings. Steam lists full Xbox controller support; confirm compatibility for the particular game and device if using a controller. |
These are contrasting examples, not a tested ranking or an exhaustive list of the best games for 2025. The ratings and feature information come from the sources cited below and may change; check the current game and store listings before purchase.
How to choose a PC game for your child
- Check the local age rating and its details. Use the rating system for the country where the game will be played. In the United States, look beyond the ESRB category to its content descriptors and interactive elements, such as user communication and purchases. ESRB says its ratings provide information about game or app content to help parents make informed family choices (ESRB ratings).
- Start with the child’s preferred play style. Consider whether they are more interested in open-ended building and exploration, farming and simulation, or another style. Then verify the specific title’s rating and features rather than assuming a genre is suitable.
- Set rules for online contact before enabling it. Decide who the child can communicate with and whether multiplayer, chat or friend requests should be available. For Minecraft, review the child-account settings and choose servers carefully; the game’s official parent guide explains multiplayer settings.
- Use account controls for time, spending and communication. Windows PC parental controls and individual game-account settings may offer different controls. ESRB’s Windows PC parental-controls guidance describes blocking by rating, spending controls, time limits and communication restrictions. Check the available settings on the accounts and devices your child actually uses.
- Recheck details when buying or changing settings. Store pages, features, regional ratings and platform support can change. Confirm the current PC listing and the settings that apply to your child’s account.
Where to find more PC options
The Microsoft Store has a PC Family & kids category that can be filtered by ESRB maturity rating. Use it to discover titles, not as a substitute for checking each game’s descriptors and information about online features.
