Sunlight sets your schedule, blood keeps you alive and unlocks power, and the castle you build is where gathering and crafting happen. PC Gamer’s Lewis Parker gave the game 89/100 in a review published May 7, 2024, praising its progression and boss fights while calling the story thin. This article explains how those systems work, what they ask of you, and where the game’s support stands in 2026.
What V Rising is and where you can play it
V Rising is a gothic open-world survival action RPG developed by Stunlock Studios. The official V Rising site describes it as a game about awakening as a vampire, building a castle, hunting for blood, and rising in power. It can be played solo or online.

The release history is split in two. Steam records the Early Access version as launching on May 17, 2022, and the full release as May 8, 2024. The PC Gamer review was published the day before that full release date.
- PC: Available through V Rising on Steam. The official launch update documents PC gamepad support and a redesigned gamepad interface, along with expanded outfit customization and additional castle decoration and music options. These features are described on the official launch update page, which is promotional material rather than an independent assessment.
- PlayStation 5: Listed as a platform on the official site. The sources used for this article do not describe PS5-specific performance, controls, or differences from the PC version, so those points are not covered here.
How vampirism shapes the rules
The game’s central idea is that classic vampire constraints are practical mechanics rather than decoration. The Steam description says you awaken as a weakened vampire after centuries of sleep, hunt for blood, avoid sunlight, build a castle, convert humans into thralls, and fight supernatural beings to take their power. Each of those lines maps onto a system you will use constantly.

Sunlight decides when and where you travel
Sunlight is hazardous to your vampire, and darkness is when hunting and resource gathering are safer. In practice, the day-night cycle is a planning constraint. Trips across the map, resource runs, and hunts are timed around the dark, so the world’s lighting affects your route and your schedule as much as its enemies do.
Blood is both fuel and progression
Blood restores your health and empowers you, which makes it the game’s central resource. It is not just something you consume to stay alive. Because blood also drives progression, the hunt for it doubles as the way you grow stronger. That tie is what makes the vampire fantasy feel mechanical rather than cosmetic.
Thralls extend the castle’s reach
Converting humans into thralls appears in the official description alongside hunting and castle-building as one of the vampire’s core activities. The sources used here establish the conversion itself but do not detail thrall roles in depth, so readers should treat thralls as a named system in the pitch rather than a fully documented mechanic in this review.
Progression: bosses unlock power, the castle supplies the rest
Progression combines two loops. One is combat-driven: boss fights unlock powers, recipes, and abilities. The other is slower and built around your base: gathering resources and crafting them at the castle you construct. The two loops feed each other, since bosses open the recipes and abilities that the castle then turns into equipment and upgrades.

Boss fights as the reward structure
Boss hunting is where supernatural power becomes a reward rather than a default. Parker wrote in his PC Gamer review that “Boss fights feel tough but fair, and each unique enough to make every new encounter fresh and exciting.” That is the strongest praise in the review, and it matches the game’s design: each boss you defeat is a gate to a new set of capabilities.
The castle and the crafting loop
The castle is the player-built home base for resource gathering and crafting. It is where the game’s slower rhythm lives. If bosses give you bursts of progress, the castle gives you the steady work of collecting materials and turning them into what the next fight requires. Players who enjoy base-building and inventory planning will find this loop the more rewarding half of the design, while players who want constant combat may find it the slower half.
Solo, co-op, and PvP
V Rising supports several ways to play, and the mode you choose changes the game more than most choices do. The Steam listing names the following options.
| Mode | Listed on Steam | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Single-player | Yes | You play alone with no other players. Steam does not say how offline play is handled, so check before relying on it. |
| Online co-op | Yes | You team up with other players over the internet to hunt bosses and build together. |
| LAN co-op | Yes | You play cooperatively with players on the same local network. Steam does not specify setup steps here. |
| Online PvP | Yes | You compete against other players on online servers. Server rules and balance are not described on the listing. |
| LAN PvP | Yes | Competitive play over a local network. Setup details are not stated on the listing. |
Solo and co-op are the lower-pressure options. You can work through the boss ladder and the castle loop at your own pace, or with friends who share the goal. Online PvP changes the stakes. Other players are not just a background presence; they are rivals for the same blood and resources. Choose the mode that matches the kind of tension you want.

What critics said
PC Gamer published Lewis Parker’s 89/100 review on May 7, 2024. He described V Rising as an action RPG layered with survival-sandbox mechanics and argued that its vampire tropes are built into play rather than laid over it. He praised the progression as a core strength and singled out the boss encounters. He was less positive about the story, writing that “Outside of a pretty vague opening cinematic and a few pieces of lore you can stitch together from NPC dialogue and certain boss descriptions, there really isn’t any story to speak of in V Rising.”
This is one reviewer’s judgment, read in the context of the game as it stood at the 1.0 release. It is not a consensus of critics, and it is not a verdict on the game’s current state. Readers who value narrative will want to weigh that criticism heavily.
Community reception on Steam
Steam’s English-language user reviews, in a 2026 snapshot, showed a “Very Positive” overall rating at 90% of 55,115 reviews and a “Very Positive” recent rating at 84% of 391 reviews. These are live platform aggregates that change over time. They reflect the player base that chooses to review on Steam, not a representative market survey or an independent score.

Stunlock’s Dev Update #32: The Next Era, dated March 26, 2026, says the studio’s initial plans for V Rising have unfolded and that it considers the journey to Dracula complete. The studio also states: “We are not currently developing a new content update for V Rising.” In the same update it adds: “We intend to continue supporting the game with balance and bug-fixing patches whenever we feel it’s necessary.”

- A comprehensive career mode with team and calendar management
- Online races for up to 8 players
The update also says Stunlock has begun work on a new game set in V Rising’s world, which it describes as very early in development.
The picture is therefore a finished content journey with ongoing maintenance, not an abandoned game. The official site displayed a May 13, 2026 item titled “Free Weekend and Patch Notes 1.1.1,” which confirms that patches have continued after the March update. Future balance or bug-fix patches are expected, though the studio has not promised new content.
Who should buy it, and who should wait
- Good fit: Players who want vampire fantasy expressed through rules rather than atmosphere, who enjoy boss progression and base-building, and who are comfortable with a sparse story.
- Consider carefully: Players who want a narrative-driven experience, since the review’s central criticism concerns story depth.
- Choose your mode deliberately: Solo and co-op suit players who want low-pressure progression; online PvP suits players who want direct competition, with server rules to check before you commit.
- Check your platform: PC has the documented gamepad and customization updates. Console-specific details are outside what this review covers.
For the question readers often ask in 2026, whether V Rising is worth buying now, the answer depends on what you want from it. If the design of the vampire’s constraints is the appeal, the systems are the strongest case for the game. If story is the priority, the game is less likely to satisfy you.
