The two games once described as being in active development have very different statuses now. Square Enix released FINAL FANTASY TACTICS – The Ivalice Chronicles in 2025, but it has not officially confirmed a Final Fantasy IX remake. Reports in 2026 based on unofficial comments describe the IX project as stalled or “on ice”—not cancelled.
What the original rumor said
On February 14, 2025, VGC reported that insider NateTheHate had said both a Final Fantasy IX remake and a Final Fantasy Tactics remake remained in active development. VGC quoted him: “Both remain in active development. FFIXR isn’t expected to see release in 2025. Maybe we’ll see it launch in 2026.” VGC’s report presented this as an insider claim, not a Square Enix announcement. The suggested 2026 window was speculation, not a confirmed release date.
The report also noted that a 2021 GeForce Now database leak listed an FFIX remake. A database listing is not an official project announcement, and it does not confirm the game’s present status.
Final Fantasy Tactics: an official game is out
Square Enix announced FINAL FANTASY TACTICS – The Ivalice Chronicles on June 6, 2025, and released it on September 30, 2025. The publisher describes it as an enhanced edition with two versions: an enhanced version and a classic version recreating the 1997 release. The enhanced edition adds a revised script, voice acting, updated visuals and quality-of-life features. Square Enix’s announcement and release notice confirm the game is available.

The official release answers the practical question for players seeking a new way to play Final Fantasy Tactics. It does not establish whether NateTheHate’s earlier comment referred to this edition or to a separate remake concept.
Final Fantasy IX: no official confirmation, and no confirmed cancellation
The Final Fantasy IX remake remains unconfirmed by Square Enix in the available reporting. Later accounts conflict with the February 2025 active-development claim, but they remain unofficial. In March 2026, GamesRadar reported that NateTheHate described the game as “on ice” and said there had been “no new movement”; he also left open the possibility that Square Enix could return to it. GamesRadar’s report does not amount to a cancellation announcement.

In August 2026, Nintendo Life reported that RPG Site editor Alex Donaldson had written on ResetEra that an FFIX remake had been “very far along,” but had stalled and was “no longer moving forward.” His post also suggested the situation could change and work might be revisited. Nintendo Life’s account is a report of an unofficial comment, not confirmation from the publisher.
Those accounts describe different snapshots and do not settle the project’s fate. “On ice” or stalled is not the same as cancelled; without a Square Enix announcement, neither active development nor cancellation should be treated as established.
