XDefiant is no longer at risk of shutdown: Ubisoft discontinued development in December 2024, stopped new downloads and purchases, and later decommissioned the game’s online service in June 2025. Ubisoft said it could not attract and retain enough players over the long term to meet its goals in the competitive free-to-play shooter market. The company did not publish a concurrent-player figure behind its decision.

What happened to XDefiant?

On December 3, 2024, Ubisoft announced that it was ending development of XDefiant. New downloads, player registrations, and purchases stopped that day. Ubisoft said Season 3 would still be released and initially planned to keep the servers online through June 3, 2025. Its support listing later recorded XDefiant’s PC online service as decommissioned in June 2025, with June 4, 2025 shown as the date.

That makes the original “at risk” framing outdated: the closure was announced, then the online service was taken offline. Ubisoft’s January 2025 investor update also retrospectively confirmed that the game had been discontinued in December.

Why did Ubisoft shut down XDefiant?

Ubisoft’s stated reason was that the game had not attracted and retained enough players over the long term to compete at the level the company wanted in the demanding free-to-play FPS market, or to justify significant further investment. Marie-Sophie de Waubert, Ubisoft’s Chief Studios and Portfolio Officer, said the team had not been able to “attract and retain enough players in the long run to compete at the level we aim for.”

The company did not identify a specific player-count threshold or publish a concurrent-player total as the basis for the decision. Ubisoft’s explanation was about sustained attraction and retention, not a disclosed number of people online at one time.

How many people played XDefiant?

XDefiant Executive Producer Mark Rubin said in 2024 that the game surpassed 5 million users quickly, setting an internal Ubisoft record for reaching that milestone, and that more than 15 million players had played it in total by the shutdown announcement. Those are cumulative reach figures; they do not show how many players were active concurrently, or how many remained over time.

Rubin also described free-to-play as a long journey, noting that some games take a long time to find their footing and become profitable. That context does not change Ubisoft’s stated conclusion that XDefiant had not sustained enough players to meet its goals.

What did Ubisoft say about refunds?

Ubisoft said it would automatically refund purchasers of the Ultimate Founder’s Pack and players who had made purchases in the 30 days before the December 3, 2024 announcement. The stated refund window was within eight weeks of the announcement. That policy does not establish whether any particular player received a refund.

Does XDefiant’s closure mean Ubisoft is abandoning live-service games?

No. Ubisoft said Games-as-a-Service remained a strategic pillar and pointed to Rainbow Six, The Crew, and For Honor as successful examples. Its explanation for XDefiant’s closure was specific to the game’s long-term player attraction and retention and the investment needed to compete in its market.

Rubin characterized XDefiant’s design ambition as an old-school arcade-shooter feel without skill-based matchmaking. That was the executive producer’s description of the game’s approach, not an independent assessment of its quality.
