In November 2016, Ubisoft announced a planned patch to change an unusually explicit non-player character (NPC) model in Watch Dogs 2. The character was not the game’s protagonist or a playable character. Ubisoft said the change would make the NPC model more consistent with others in the game.

Contemporary reporting described the issue as an NPC model featuring an unusually explicit genital texture. Ubisoft’s statement, quoted by GameSpot as having been issued to Polygon, said: “We’re aware that one of the NPC models in Watch Dogs 2 is rendered in a way that is particularly explicit. While Watch Dogs 2 is a mature-rated game, we apologize and will update this NPC model to make it more consistent with other NPC models in the game in a patch to be released this week. We also are working with our first-party partners to ensure that players can continue to play and share all content from the game within the bounds of the first parties’ respective codes of conduct.” GameSpot

That explanation is Ubisoft’s stated rationale, as reported at the time: the model was particularly explicit, and the planned adjustment was intended to bring it closer to other NPC models. It does not establish a broader change to the game’s mature content.
How the story became public
Reports said the incident came to wider attention after a player shared an in-game image of the model. They also reported that Sony suspended the player’s PlayStation Network account.
