Ubisoft delisted The Crew and shut down its servers on 31 March 2024, leaving the game inaccessible even to people who had bought it. The episode raises a real question about game ownership, but “we own nothing” is a provocation, not a settled legal rule: EU consumer law provides protections and remedies, yet the European Commission says it sets no fixed period for supplying an online game.
What Ubisoft did to The Crew
Ubisoft said The Crew launched in December 2014. In its 2023 announcement, the company said it would remove the game, all editions and virtual-currency packs from online stores. It set 31 March 2024 as the last day existing owners could play; after that, the planned server shutdown would make the game inaccessible on PC, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Amazon Luna and Ubisoft+. Ubisoft cited “upcoming server infrastructure and licensing constraints” as the reason. It directed recent purchasers to their store’s refund policy. Ubisoft’s shutdown announcement

Delisting and shutting down servers were separate actions: delisting stopped new digital sales, while the server shutdown ended access for existing players. Ubisoft’s announcement described those actions and the resulting inaccessibility. It did not describe the event as a promise to delete the game from every player’s library. PC Gamer later reported that Ubisoft began revoking licenses after the shutdown; that report is distinct from the original announcement. PC Gamer’s report
The game’s design helps explain why a server closure could end play rather than merely remove an online feature. Ubisoft described The Crew as built around a shared open world and live-service support. The company said in 2023 that The Crew 2 had more than 2 million active players per month and that the franchise had reached more than 40 million players “last year.” Those are Ubisoft’s own reported figures, not independently audited totals. Does buying a game guarantee permanent access?
A purchase can give a player rights under the applicable sale terms and consumer law, but it does not by itself establish that a server-dependent game will remain playable forever. In a 5 June 2024 answer, the European Commission said EU consumer rules require transparency about material aspects of an offer, protect consumers against unfair commercial practices and contract terms, and provide remedies for lack of conformity. It also stated: “This legislation does not set specific requirements as to the duration of the supply of products, including of online video games.” European Commission answer, 5 June 2024
That answer is general legal context, not a ruling on Ubisoft or The Crew. The Commission said national courts and administrative authorities handle individual cases and disputes. The relevant outcome can depend on the offer made to the buyer, the applicable terms, the game’s technical design and the law governing that purchase.

Ubisoft’s current general Terms of Use say that a permanent high-speed internet connection may be necessary for services using DRM. That statement does not, by itself, establish which terms governed every The Crew purchase or settle whether the shutdown complied with those terms. Ubisoft Terms of Use
What the French consumer lawsuit does—and does not—establish
On 31 March 2026, French consumer group UFC-Que Choisir announced that it had sued Ubisoft before the Tribunal judiciaire de Créteil. The association challenges contract clauses and commercial practices it considers abusive or misleading. It says it is seeking an end to the practices, removal of the disputed clauses and recognition of harm to collective consumer interests. These are the claimant’s allegations and requested remedies, not findings by a court. UFC-Que Choisir’s announcement, 31 March 2026

The announcement confirms that a case was filed; it does not establish a judgment or the later procedural status. It therefore cannot be cited as proof that Ubisoft acted unlawfully—or as proof that the company’s conduct was lawful. The dispute puts the practical gap between paying for a game and retaining access into a legal forum, but the outcome remains unresolved in the available account.

A disc or cartridge can preserve a copy of game data, but physical media alone does not guarantee offline play. Ubisoft announced a physical retail edition of The Crew Motorfest for Nintendo Switch 2 from 8 October 2026, alongside a digital edition, and explicitly said an online connection is required to play. It is a later game in the franchise, not an offline-access version of The Crew. Ubisoft’s Motorfest announcement

- The Crew 2 - Xbox one
For any game, the practical preservation questions are more specific than “physical or digital?” Check whether basic play requires an account or server connection, what content remains available if the servers close, and whether the publisher has announced an end-of-service plan or offline mode. Then consider the store terms and consumer law that apply to the purchase. Those answers vary by game and jurisdiction; the examples here do not establish a universal legal rule.
