What games are in Halo: The Master Chief Collection?
MCC includes six games: Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, Halo 2: Anniversary, Halo 3, Halo 3: ODST, Halo: Reach, and Halo 4. Halo Waypoint describes the collection as spanning 67 campaign missions and more than 120 multiplayer maps. Halo Waypoint’s collection page also highlights community-created Forge content and mod tools.

What should I play first?
It depends on whether you want release order or the story’s chronological framing. Halo Support’s Quick Start Guide recommends Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary for players following original release order. Halo Waypoint presents the story path as beginning with Halo: Reach and ending with Halo 4; that is a different sequence, not the same recommendation. The Quick Start Guide recommends Quick Start and Easy or Normal difficulty for new players.
What can I play in MCC?
The main menu offers three broad ways to play: Campaigns, Multiplayer, and Firefight. Campaigns let you play the included games’ stories; Multiplayer covers competitive and social matches; Firefight is a cooperative wave-based mode in supported games. The available options can depend on the selected game and platform.

Are MCC playlists always available?
No. Matchmaking playlists can rotate in and out. For example, a Halo Support update published in July 2023 described Shotty Snipers as a rotational playlist; that historical note does not establish whether it is available now. Check the in-game matchmaking menu for the current selection. The collection’s map count is a total across its games, not a promise that every map or playlist appears in every queue.
How do I play with friends online?
For online play, each player needs an Xbox network account. The Quick Start Guide says to add friends through Xbox first, then invite them from the in-game Roster. You may need to send invitations again after closing and restarting MCC.
Cross-play between Xbox and PC is automatic for supported play, but Campaign and Campaign Playlists cannot cross-play according to the guide. Do not assume that every game mode or platform pairing supports the same cross-play options.

Steam Deck co-op limitation in the February 26, 2026 snapshot
Halo Support’s global known-issues page, dated February 26, 2026, for build 1.3528.0.0, says Steam Deck players cannot play Campaign Co-op or Spartan Ops with PC or Xbox players. It says sessions made up entirely of Steam Deck players function as expected. The same snapshot advises Steam Deck users who encounter input-restricted matchmaking to select Gamepad under Options & Career > Settings > Control. How do I play split screen in MCC?
The Quick Start Guide documents local split-screen on Xbox, with up to four players on one console. You need one Xbox controller per player. More than two players can play only Multiplayer; the guide does not document four-player Campaign split-screen.
- Connect an Xbox controller for each player.
- Open the in-game Roster.
- Have each additional player press A on their controller to sign in or join as a guest.
- Select Multiplayer and start a mode that supports the number of players joining.
Guest profiles do not retain save data after signing out. This controller requirement applies to local Xbox split-screen, not online play, PC play, or solo play. The Quick Start Guide has the official setup details.

What is Forge in MCC?
Forge is a set of in-game map-editing tools that lets players create and customize multiplayer maps and share community-made content. MCC includes community-created Forge content, and Forge features differ by game.
A July 2023 Halo Support update added Halo 3 campaign equipment—including Invincibility, Cloaking, and Auto Turret—and weapons such as the Golf Club, Flamethrower, Missile Pod, Machinegun Turret, and Plasma Turret for use in Forge on Halo 3 multiplayer maps. This describes that update’s additions, not a guarantee that every object is available across all MCC games. See the dated July 2023 patch notes.

For standard settings, open the game’s Settings and choose the Controls tab to configure the available control options for your input device. The available controls and layouts vary by platform and game.
Custom gamepad layouts created with the Excession tool can also be selected from the in-game Settings menu’s Controls tab. This is a tool-based workflow; it does not mean every community layout is included as a built-in preset. Microsoft Learn provides creator documentation entry points for Excession and Halo modding.
What account or subscription do I need for online play?
Halo Support’s requirements page says an Xbox network account is required for online play on all covered platforms. The subscription requirements it lists depend on where you play and how you access the game:

Are there accessibility or known-issue caveats?
Halo Waypoint describes adjustable audio, control, and gameplay settings intended to support accessibility. The known-issues page dated February 26, 2026, for build 1.3528.0.0, also listed specific problems: some color and dialogue palettes could be difficult to read because of contrast, some Chinese-language gameplay subtitles were missing in Halo 3 and Halo 3: ODST, and Narrator missed certain campaign warning pop-ups and player Joinable Status. These are dated issue reports, not claims that the problems remain unchanged in every current build. Consult the current known-issues page for updates.
