Underworld Ascendant Reviews: Is It Worth Playing Now?

Underworld Ascendant promised a sandbox of stealth, combat, and magic, but drew harsh launch reviews. Here’s how to judge the later patched game.

Underworld Ascendant is a single-player fantasy RPG built around stealth, combat, magic, and environmental experimentation. Its launch-era reviews were sharply negative, and later updates addressed parts of the game’s structure, AI, gameplay, and performance. Those updates matter when judging the game today, but they do not erase the original criticism or establish that every issue was fixed.

What is Underworld Ascendant?

Developed by OtherSide Entertainment and published by 505 Games, Underworld Ascendant launched on November 15, 2018. It is a first-person action RPG set in the Stygian Abyss. Steam presents it as a game where players combine combat, stealth, and magic and experiment with different ways to solve challenges. Steam’s game listing provides the official store description and platform details.

The appeal is the promise of an immersive-sim sandbox: rather than relying on a single prescribed solution, players are encouraged to make use of the world and their abilities. The key question raised by reviews is whether that freedom is supported by clear, dependable systems—especially in combat, quests, and progression.

What did reviews say?

GameSpot’s launch-era review

GameSpot awarded the game 2/10 in its 2018 review, titled “Underworld Ascendant Review: Going Under.” That score is a contemporary assessment of the release-era game, not a new evaluation of the current patched build.

PC Gamer’s criticism

PC Gamer’s review also criticized the game, including the opacity of its systems. That criticism speaks to an important trade-off in the game’s design: experimentation can feel liberating when the rules are legible, but frustrating when players cannot readily understand how combat, magic, or objectives are meant to work.

These reviews describe a substantial gap between the game’s advertised systemic freedom and the experience critics encountered at launch. They should be read as launch-era coverage, not as proof that every later version plays identically.

Did updates improve the game?

OtherSide Entertainment published updates in 2019 that addressed several areas raised by the game’s troubled reception. The announcements establish the developer’s stated focus and changes; they do not independently demonstrate that all problems were resolved.

Is Underworld Ascendant worth playing now?

It depends on what you want from it and how much tolerance you have for rough or opaque systems. The original reviews are a warning about the launch experience; later patches make it inaccurate to treat the launch build as the only version that exists. But the documented update scope is not enough to promise a polished or fully repaired game.

  • Consider it if first-person fantasy, stealth and magic combinations, and experimenting with environmental solutions are the main draw.
  • Be cautious if you want clear objectives, immediately readable combat and progression, or assurance of smooth performance. The available update notes report improvements, not a guarantee for every system or PC.

Steam’s listing showed a Mixed user-review label, with 41% positive from 696 reviews in the snapshot accessed in 2026. That is a changing Steam-specific count and share, not a stable measure of all players or critics. Check the current listing for its live rating and review count before using that figure to make a decision.

Empire's End Strategy Board Game
  • UNIQUE TAKE ON CIV BUILDERS: You lead a grand civilization at the height of its influence, but can you save it from collapse? In Empire's End, 2-4 players compete to keep calamity at bay by bidding their way through disasters.
  • FUN MECHANISM: Empire's End marries the intuitive and elegant mechanism of reverse-bidding with engine-building, long-term planning, and strategic depth. The result is a game with a quick tempo, abundant tension, and multiple challenging paths to victory.
  • SIMILAR TO NO THANKS: With each disaster that befalls an empire, its people grow in wisdom and resilience. • MORE TO IT THAN DISASTER: Each turn, players move along a progress track that dictates whether they will face a disaster or another type of phase. Players can gain new resources during Economy phases, rebuild lost territories during Industry phases, and challenge one another during Military phases.
  • PLAY FASTER WITH LIGHTNING MODE: Want a quick game instead? Our Lightning Mode in the rulebook plays the same as the regular game, but in fewer rounds!
