Unicorn Overlord is a tactical RPG whose strongest draw is its layered squad combat: players assemble units, set conditions for when skills are used, and adapt their plans to changing encounters. In GameSpot’s March 13, 2024 review, Heidi Kemps rated it 8/10, praising the strategy systems and presentation while criticizing its familiar story and limited character development. That makes it a strong fit for players who enjoy building and refining tactics, with a caveat for anyone chiefly seeking a distinctive narrative.

What do reviews say about the combat?
The main point of praise is the way preparation shapes the outcome of battles. Before sending a unit into an encounter, players choose its members and classes, equip them, and set conditions that determine when its skills are used. Class matchups and skill choices matter, so assembling a squad is not simply a matter of picking the strongest characters; units need a workable balance of offense, defense, mobility, and support.
In her GameSpot review, published March 13, 2024, Heidi Kemps praised the evolving battle scenarios, unit customization, experimentation, exploration, and rebuilding loop. Her review also notes that the many interacting choices can feel daunting at first. The appeal is in learning how those systems fit together and revising a unit when its setup is not suited to a particular challenge.

#1 Best Overall
- Traverse a vibrant world, assemble units and direct them into exquisitely animated battles.
- Perform heroic deeds and grow renown throughout the five nations.
- Cultivate a grand army with over 60 unique characters, from humans and elves to massive beasts and heavenly angels.
Encounters begin when a unit makes contact with an enemy during a battle stage. Because skill-use conditions can be configured in advance, the tactical work includes deciding not only who fights, but how the squad should respond. The official page lists Story, Normal, Tactical, and Expert difficulty levels, as well as an online Coliseum mode for PvP battles between player units.
How strong is the story?
The narrative is the clearest reservation in the cited review. Kemps found the fantasy-RPG setup familiar and the characters’ personalities and development limited. That is one reviewer’s assessment, rather than a universal response, but it is useful context: the game’s most distinctive strengths in this review are its tactical systems and visual presentation, not its storytelling.

Kemps summarized her view this way: “Unicorn Overlord’s combat is the standout element of the game–which is good, because it manages to carry the weight of a disappointing story.”
