No ranking can settle a definitive top 100 PS1 games, because the library is large and each list measures something different. Metacritic orders its PS1 browse page by critic aggregate scores, GamesRadar+ ranks its editorial top 25 by writer judgement, and GameSpot’s 2025 selection is presented alphabetically. The most reliable way to use any of them is to understand its method, check the facts it states, and start from games that several independent sources back.
What the major lists actually measure
- Metacritic’s PS1 browse page sorts games by Metascore, which aggregates critic reviews. When checked in 2026 it displayed 196 results. That count and the order both change as the database updates, so treat it as a snapshot rather than a fixed ranking.
- GamesRadar+ publishes an editorial top 25 based on its writers’ judgement. Its top five place Metal Gear Solid first, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night second, Final Fantasy VII third, Resident Evil 2 fourth and Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2 fifth.
- GameSpot’s 2025 page presents its selections alphabetically. It tells you what is worth playing, not which game is best.
None of these is a sales chart, and none of the sources reviewed publishes market or player-survey data that would make one game objectively more popular or better than another. A list is an argument with stated criteria, which is why the criteria matter more than the numbering.

Where the leading sources agree
The table below compares the titles that appear in the retrieved top groups of the aggregate and editorial lists. Where a source did not state a reason or a rank for a title, the cell says so rather than filling the gap.
| Game | Metacritic (2026 snapshot) | GamesRadar+ rank | Reason given in the coverage reviewed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2 | Metascore 98, first | #5 | Combo system and park creation |
| Tekken 3 | Metascore 96, second | Not stated | Depth of fighting |
| Gran Turismo | Metascore 96, third | Not stated | Not stated |
| Final Fantasy IX | Metascore 94, fourth | Not stated | Not stated |
| Chrono Cross | Metascore 94, fifth | Not stated | Not stated |
| Metal Gear Solid | Metascore 94, sixth | #1 | Not stated |
| Castlevania: Symphony of the Night | Not stated (outside the retrieved top six) | #2 | Not stated |
| Final Fantasy VII | Not stated (outside the retrieved top six) | #3 | Presentation and story |
| Resident Evil 2 | Not stated (outside the retrieved top six) | #4 | Scenario structure |
Metal Gear Solid and Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2 are the only titles that sit in the top groups of both the aggregate list and GamesRadar+’s top five. Every other overlap is a matter of method: a game can be strongly reviewed without being a favourite of an editorial team, and the reverse is also true.

Why many top-100 tables cannot be used as written
One widely shared top-100 ranking under this same heading shows the problems to check for before trusting any numbered table. Its six stated criteria are reasonable: play feel, design, content depth, technical execution, longevity and accessibility, with ties checked against legacy reception and player demand. The execution, however, has errors that make its order unreliable.
- Non-PS1 entries. The table includes Kingdom Hearts, which is not a PS1 game, and Final Fantasy VII Remake, a later remake rather than the 1997 original.
- Duplicates. Titles such as Metal Gear Solid, Driver 2, NBA Jam Extreme and PaRappa the Rapper appear more than once.
- Later-platform and modern titles. Several entries belong to later hardware generations and do not fit an original PS1 library.
- Dates that do not match the original release. Each year needs checking against the original PS1 release for the region you care about.
The page opens with Final Fantasy Tactics, followed by Final Fantasy VII, Metal Gear Solid, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night and Chrono Cross. That order is the page’s own claim. Because the table contains the errors above, it should not be read as a verified verdict.

Original discs and hardware
- Confirm the release. Make sure the disc or listing is the original PS1 release, not a remake, port or later collection of the same title.
- Check the region and language. Read the region information on the case and disc, and confirm it matches the console you plan to use. Language and audio versions can also differ between regions.
- Inspect condition. Look for scratches on the disc surface and check the case and inserts. Original case inserts are a useful clue that a copy is authentic.
- Plan the display connection. Original consoles output analogue video, so current flat-panel screens may need an upscaler or a display with a retro-friendly input option. Test the setup before you assume it will work.
- Plan for saves. PS1 games store progress on memory cards, so keep an original card or a clear saving plan before you start a long RPG.
Emulation setups handle controller mapping and memory-card emulation differently. This guide does not test or recommend particular emulators, adapters, consoles, discs or memory cards.
