VALORANT Patch 4.03 changed Deathmatch spawning on February 15, 2022, but players soon reported being respawned in an enemy’s direct line of sight. On February 18, Riot announced an immediate reduction in Deathmatch’s player count from 14 to 12 as a mitigation. The available record does not establish that this permanently fixed the spawn issue.
What Patch 4.03 changed about Deathmatch spawns
Riot’s Patch 4.03 notes, published February 15, 2022, said the changes responded to player frustration with the spawning system. Riot removed or relocated some locations it considered dangerous, adjusted spawn logic and placement to make encounters more likely, and favored respawn locations farther from where a player had been defeated.
The patch also fixed an issue that prevented spawn logic from being applied properly during warm-up. Separately, Riot cut the Deathmatch respawn timer from 3 seconds to 1.5 seconds. These were several adjustments to the mode, not an announcement that players should appear in opponents’ sights.
Why players reported direct-sight spawns
After the patch, players described rough Deathmatch matches, including respawning in direct line of sight of another player. On February 18, 2022, a post on r/VALORANT reproduced a statement attributed to Riot’s PlayVALORANT account acknowledging those reports. The post is a community reproduction, rather than a Riot-hosted record of the statement.

Riot’s 14-to-12-player response
In the statement reproduced by the Reddit post, Riot said it would reduce the number of players in Deathmatch from 14 to 12 immediately. Riot described the reduction as a way to mitigate the rough experience and said it would keep monitoring the situation.
This was a different intervention from Patch 4.03’s spawn-location and selection changes: it reduced the number of players in a match. The available sources do not measure the effect of either intervention or establish that the player-count reduction permanently eliminated direct-sight spawns.

What Riot’s current mode description does—and does not—say
Riot Support’s FFA Deathmatch description says respawns happen at locations intended to be free of enemies but close to the action, and that enemies are revealed each time a player respawns. This is a general description of the mode, not a technical account of its spawn-selection algorithm or a guarantee that a direct sightline can never occur.
The sources establish that players reported the problem after Patch 4.03 and that Riot announced a mitigation in February 2022. They do not establish the specific bug’s present status or disclose the exact spawn-selection rules.
