Neither subject type is universally better in Europa Universalis V. Choose a Fiefdom if you meet its monarchy and religion-group requirements and want your monarch to rule the junior title directly. Choose a Vassal for the conventional subject relationship described as administering territory for its overlord and joining its military campaigns. The available v1.2.1 reference gives both the same diplomatic upkeep and Great Power transfer, so those figures do not decide the comparison.

These are mechanics values in Paradoxpedia’s community-maintained EU5 database indexed as version 1.2.1, not a guarantee for every patch. The database displays 05/08/2026, but its date convention is unclear. Subject types also define broader rules such as taxation, war, succession law, and Great Power Score transfer; the table is not a complete account of every interaction. See the subject-type reference.
What makes a Fiefdom different?
A Fiefdom is not simply another name for a vassal. The reference describes it as a junior title belonging to the overlord’s ruler, with the overlord’s monarch ruling it directly. Its stated eligibility is narrower: the overlord must be a monarchy, and the subject must share the overlord’s religion group. If either condition is not met, the Fiefdom option does not fit the rules stated on the reference page. The Fiefdom reference lists it at level 3.
What does a Vassal offer?
The Vassal is presented as the typical subject: it oversees territory on its overlord’s behalf, pays vassal fees, and joins the overlord’s military campaigns. Paradox’s Tinto Talks #51 uses that description; the forum excerpt does not identify a specific speaker. The current mechanics values in the indexed reference list Vassals at level 2. The available sources do not establish a universal advantage in income, troop strength, loyalty, or autonomy over a Fiefdom. See the Vassal reference.
#1 Best Overall
Which one should you choose?
- Choose a Fiefdom when you qualify as a monarchy sharing the subject’s religion group and want the overlord’s ruler to govern the junior title directly.
- Choose a Vassal when you want the standard subject arrangement and value the campaign-participation role described for Vassals.
- Compare the in-game terms if your decision depends on a specific tax, war, succession, or annexation interaction. Those rules are subject-type mechanics and can change between patches.
Annexation and version caveats
For both types, the v1.2.1 pages list a minimum of ten years before annexation, minimum opinion of 150, and stalling if opinion falls below 125. They also list a minimum offer opinion of 150. These are reference values, not independently verified current-build results; use the tooltips in your installed version before planning around them. The pages additionally list 20 favors to annul a Vassal and 30 to annul a Fiefdom, another patch-sensitive difference.
The reference database is indexed as v1.2.1, and its displayed date is 05/08/2026; neither the date convention nor whether that is the latest build on 2026-10-08 is established. Check the subject interface and tooltips in your own game for the rules that apply to your patch.
