There is no single best video game console. The right choice depends on which games you want, whether a library you already own needs to carry over, whether you want a disc drive, and whether you play on a TV, on the go, or both. This guide compares the three current console families covered by official manufacturer pages: PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2. It is an overview of those platforms, not a list of every console or gaming device on the market.
Work through these questions before you buy
- List the games you actually play. Backward compatibility and feature support are set title by title, so whether your games run with the features you want matters more than a headline hardware specification.
- Check the library you already own. Owners of PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, or Switch games should check each important title before assuming it will carry over. The platform sections below explain what each manufacturer promises.
- Decide between a disc drive and digital-only. Confirm the exact model before buying, because a single console family can include a model without a disc drive.
- Decide where you will play. Nintendo Switch 2 is built for handheld, tabletop, and TV use. PS5 and Xbox Series X|S are described as living-room console families.
- Measure your display. Check whether your TV supports the resolution, refresh rate, and HDMI features you want.
- Budget for storage and accessories. Expansion cards, docks, and drives are model-specific, so check requirements before purchase.

Playing your existing games
PlayStation 5
Sony says PS5 can play over 8,500 PS4 games. That is Sony’s own compatibility count and has not been independently verified. It also does not mean every PS4 title behaves identically on PS5, so check the specific title before relying on it.
Xbox Series X|S
Microsoft says Series X|S is compatible with thousands of games across four Xbox generations. The qualifier matters: most Xbox One titles carry over, while only selected Xbox 360 and original Xbox titles do. Microsoft’s Xbox Backward Compatible Games page warns: “Specific features vary by game; download required.” Look up each older title rather than assuming the whole catalog is available.

Nintendo Switch 2
Switch 2 can play compatible physical and digital games released for Switch, but Nintendo says the hardware is different. Its compatibility listing states: “The Nintendo Switch 2 system’s hardware is different from that of Nintendo Switch, and some Nintendo Switch games may not be supported on or fully compatible with Nintendo Switch 2.” That listing is marked current as of June 5, 2025, so check each game’s current page before you upgrade.
Display features depend on three things
Resolution, frame rate, and variable refresh rate are only delivered when the console, the game, and the display all support them. Advertised maximums are not guaranteed outcomes. Sony’s PS5 features page puts it plainly: “Results may vary depending on the TV you’re using and game you’re playing.”

Before buying, check:
- Your TV’s supported resolutions, refresh rate, HDR, and HDMI features, including VRR and auto low-latency mode where your display offers them.
- The specific games you play, since a game may not use every feature its console supports.
- Whether you plan to play on the Switch 2’s built-in 1080p screen, on a TV, or both. TV output up to 4K is available only in TV mode.
Storage and accessories are model-specific
Each platform uses its own storage and accessory rules. Do not assume a card, drive, dock, or cable from one family works with another.
- PS5: You can expand storage with a compatible internal M.2 SSD. PS5 games stored on external USB drives must be moved back to internal storage before they will play. PS4 games can be played directly from USB or internal storage.
- Xbox Series X|S: Microsoft offers a proprietary storage expansion card for this family, designed to match the console’s SSD experience. Use the card Microsoft specifies for Series X|S.
- Nintendo Switch 2: Game storage requires microSD Express cards. A conventional microSD card is limited to viewing Switch screenshots and videos. The original Switch dock is not compatible with Switch 2.
