It softens that challenge with checkpoints, save states, and an undead mode. Review scores are mixed-to-positive in Metacritic’s October 8, 2026 snapshot, but the game’s appeal depends more on whether its old-school difficulty suits you than on an aggregate number.
What kind of game is Volgarr the Viking II?
Released on August 6, 2024, Volgarr the Viking II is a single-player action-platformer developed by Digital Eclipse and Crazy Viking Studios and published by Digital Eclipse and Atari, according to its Steam store page. The official description calls it “A hardcore, 2D action-platformer where only precision can keep you from death.”
Its arcade-style challenge is built around precise movement and combat. The store description also points to new power-ups, magic, enemy types, worlds inspired by Norse mythology, bosses, and multiple endings. That combination makes this a deliberate throwback rather than a broadly forgiving platformer.
How hard is Volgarr the Viking II?
Expect a game that asks for careful inputs and repeated attempts. The official description emphasizes precision and a punishing experience; it does not provide a difficulty rating or a measure of how long an average player should expect to spend on a section. The practical question is whether learning through failure feels satisfying to you.

#1 Best Overall
- Hack and slash your way through this 2D action-platformer where precision is key
- New and larger worlds inspired by Norse mythology to explore
- Brand new enemies, forms of magic, and power-ups to keep your adventure fresh and exciting
- Multiple endings for maximum replayability
- Modern quality of life improvements such as checkpoints, save states, and an undead mode
Options that make the challenge more flexible
The Steam description names three ways to modify the experience: checkpoints, save states, and an undead mode. These provide alternatives to tackling the game in its most punishing form, but the available description does not explain their exact rules or how each affects progression. If you want a fixed, unalterable arcade challenge, check the game’s current in-game options and platform listing before buying; if you welcome tools that let you manage a demanding game on your terms, their inclusion is a meaningful plus.

Steam’s snapshot accessed October 8, 2026 shows 81% positive from 85 user reviews, labelled “Very Positive.” That is a separate platform’s user-review measure, not a critic score; both its percentage and review count can change as users post more reviews. Read the Metacritic listing and Steam reviews as dated snapshots rather than permanent ratings.
Who is likely to enjoy it?
- A good fit: players who like retro-styled action games, precise controls, difficult encounters, and learning by retrying.
- Potentially a poor fit: players who want a forgiving platformer, dislike repeating sections, or find demanding timing more frustrating than rewarding.
- Worth weighing: checkpoints, save states, and undead mode offer ways to adjust the experience, while the mixed critic snapshot suggests the game’s specific blend of challenge and retro appeal will not land equally for everyone.
Those are fit considerations drawn from the game’s stated design and published review aggregates, not a claim of hands-on testing.

Volgarr the Viking II is worth considering if you actively want a precise, punishing 2D action-platformer and are comfortable with repeated attempts. Its named challenge options give players some flexibility, but do not turn it into a conventional easygoing platformer. The mixed critic reception and more favorable, but limited, Steam user snapshot are best read as evidence of a game with a clear audience—not a universal recommendation.
