Walmart later told Gizmodo that a system error affected a small group of customers. The reports did not establish how many orders were affected or explain every individual cancellation; they are historical reports, not an announcement that Walmart is cancelling orders now.
What happened to Walmart Switch 2 pre-orders?
The reports came in two waves: customers described cancellations in May 2025, then additional cancellation notices appeared in the days before launch. Walmart’s June 3 response acknowledged an error affecting a “small group” of customers, but did not give a count or say that every reported case shared the same cause.

Timeline of the reports
- April 24, 2025: The Associated Press reported that demand was high, preorder sites experienced problems across retailers, and Walmart’s preorder listings sold out quickly. Walmart said customers would have another opportunity to buy on June 5. AP’s preorder coverage provides launch context, not proof of why a particular order was cancelled.
- May 6, 2025: NintendoSoup reported customer accounts of Walmart cancellations and, in some cases, deleted accounts. At that point, it said Walmart had not offered an official explanation. Online speculation about anti-scalper systems was not confirmed. NintendoSoup’s report describes those early accounts.
- June 3, 2025: Gizmodo reported further cancellation notices close to launch and quoted Walmart saying: “We have identified a small group of customers whose orders were unfortunately affected by a system error. We recognize how exciting this new product launch is and are working to ensure these customers are taken care of.” The statement was reported by Gizmodo; it does not identify a spokesperson or establish the cause of every customer’s cancellation. Gizmodo’s June 3 report includes the response.
- June 5, 2025: The Switch 2 launched, with major retailers including Walmart offering the console. AP’s launch-day coverage describes the retail context.
Why did Walmart cancel my pre-order?
For the group Walmart acknowledged, the company cited a system error. The available reporting does not establish a verified total, explain the reason for each customer’s cancellation, or confirm theories such as anti-scalper enforcement or inventory shortages. High demand and quickly sold-out listings explain the launch environment, but do not by themselves explain an individual order notice.
What to do if your order was affected
- Open your Walmart account and check the order’s current status directly.
- Contact Walmart about that specific order and ask what happened and whether any remedy is available.
- Do not assume the order will be reinstated, replaced, or compensated: the cited reports do not promise a standard resolution. Verify any message against the order shown in your account.
Does Nintendo’s preorder cancellation policy apply?
Nintendo’s support guidance concerns digital game pre-orders made through Nintendo eShop and says those can only be cancelled seven or more days before the game’s release. It is not Walmart’s policy for a physical Switch 2 console preorder. See Nintendo’s eShop preorder guidance for its limited scope.
