This Final Fantasy VI walkthrough follows the main story from Narshe through Kefka’s Tower, with optional World of Ruin recruitment and endgame preparation kept separate from the required route. It targets the later releases titled Final Fantasy VI; the original North American Super NES release was titled Final Fantasy III. Because route details can vary by edition, treat instructions as guidance for the release you are playing rather than a guaranteed cross-version checklist.
Where do you start in Final Fantasy VI?
Begin in Narshe and follow the story through Figaro and the Returners. The opening route soon splits into three character scenarios; complete each scenario to reunite the party and continue toward Zozo.
- Play through the Narshe opening and proceed to Figaro.
- Follow the Returners route until the game presents the three character scenarios.
- Complete all three scenarios, then continue together through Zozo.
How do you complete the three character scenarios?
When the scenarios become available, select each and advance its story to the reunion point. They are parallel parts of the main route, not optional detours. Make sure you have finished all three before trying to move on; the game’s progression depends on completing the set.
How do you get through the Narshe defense and Opera House?
Narshe defense
The defense sequence is a major checkpoint. Before starting it, arrange your available characters into the groups the game asks you to control and be ready to switch between them as threats approach. If the assault reaches the defended position, the sequence can end badly, so do not leave a weak or inactive group unattended.

Opera House
Follow the Opera House events in order and keep an eye on the timer once the timed sequence begins. The timer is a real progression constraint: finish the required actions before it expires rather than exploring or pausing to reorganize. Then continue toward Vector.
How do you progress from Vector to Thamasa?
After Vector, the route continues through the Sealed Gate and onward to Thamasa. Treat the Sealed Gate as a main-story checkpoint and follow the scenes and route cues there before proceeding. Once in Thamasa, complete the story events that lead toward the Floating Continent.

How do you escape the Floating Continent?
The Floating Continent sequence has a timed escape at its conclusion. Advance through the area and its story encounters, then follow the escape prompt promptly when it appears; do not mistake the final choice or countdown for an optional scene. The sequence leads into the World of Ruin.
What should you do first in the World of Ruin?
The World of Ruin is both the next story phase and an opportunity to recover allies. Follow the route that restores access to the airship, then use it to locate returning characters. Recruiting allies is distinct from simply advancing the main plot, so explore and seek them out if you want a larger roster before the final dungeon.

Kefka’s Tower requires three parties, so prepare them before entering rather than concentrating all your strongest resources in one group. A walkthrough FAQ recommends spreading healing and magic across all three teams and coordinating their switches as they explore and handle bosses.

What does this walkthrough cover—and what does it leave to reference guides?
This is a route guide for the main story checkpoints and broad endgame preparation, not a room-by-room map or a complete collectible checklist. For optional completion goals, consult a guide organized around sidequests and reference material. StrategyWiki’s listed guide contents separate the main route from sidequests, enemies, bugs and glitches, the Coliseum, tips, and appendices: Final Fantasy VI guide contents.
