Critics are broadly positive about Warframe, but they also warn that its dense systems can make the game difficult to approach at first. Epic Games Store currently displays an OpenCritic average of 73, a Fair rating, and a 56% Critics Recommend figure. Those figures are an undated snapshot on the store page—not a dated review of the current game build.
What do critics think of Warframe?
Epic Games Store’s Warframe listing, which credits OpenCritic for its review material, shows a 73 Top Critic Average, a Fair rating, and 56% Critics Recommend. The overall picture is positive, though the recommendation share suggests that critics are not unanimous.
The same page highlights these individual reviews:
| Publication and critic | Score shown | What the excerpt emphasizes |
|---|---|---|
| PC Gamer, Steven Messner | 86/100 | Complexity is daunting, but the combat and flexible progression are appealing. |
| IGN, Tom Marks | 8.6/10 | The game is hard to approach, but worth the effort of getting comfortable with it. |
| GameSpot, Alessandro Fillari | 8/10 | A satisfying, comprehensive free-to-play RPG that remained exciting “six years on,” in the review’s original temporal framing. |
These scores use each publication’s own scale. They are not directly comparable percentages, and averaging them together would not produce a meaningful common score. Epic’s page does not state when its aggregate was refreshed, how many reviews it counts, or which platforms the included reviews cover, so it should not be read as a newly verified or platform-specific verdict.
Is Warframe good, and what do the reviews praise?
The strongest consistent appeal in the cited excerpts is the combination of satisfying combat and flexible progression. Reviewers describe a free-to-play game with a substantial range of activity and systems, giving players room to develop their characters and choose how to engage with its action. For someone who enjoys learning interconnected mechanics and building toward new capabilities, that depth is part of the draw.

#1 Best Overall
The caveat is inseparable from the praise: the same breadth that supports long-term progression can make the first steps feel confusing. IGN’s excerpt calls the game not easily approachable, while PC Gamer explicitly acknowledges its daunting complexity. The reviews suggest that Warframe can reward patience, rather than promising an immediately clear or simple start.
Is Warframe beginner friendly?
Not especially, if “beginner friendly” means that the game explains its systems clearly and makes it easy to know what to do next. The onboarding challenge is not merely a critic’s impression: Digital Extremes president Sheldon Carter told GamesRadar+ that the team had not “ever quite got that 100% right” and was always working on it. The remark underscores that helping new players find their footing is an ongoing design challenge for a long-running game with many systems.

That does not mean a new player should avoid it. It means the initial learning curve is a real part of the decision. If you enjoy discovering mechanics over time, the complexity may become an advantage; if you want a game that quickly teaches its core loop and keeps choices simple, the opening may be frustrating.
Can you play solo, or is co-op required?
Epic lists Warframe as supporting single-player as well as online multiplayer and co-op. The store listing therefore does not present co-op as a requirement. You can approach the game as a solo player or play alongside others, depending on your preference.

Is Warframe worth trying?
The base game is listed as free on Epic Games Store, making a hands-on trial a practical way to judge whether its combat and progression suit you. The critic aggregate is useful as a broad signal, but it cannot tell you whether you will enjoy working through the early complexity. If the action and long-term systems sound appealing, trying the free base game is more informative than treating the store’s undated average as a verdict on the current build.
