The sightings prompted speculation about where a meteor might hit, but Epic had not confirmed a target before launch. Its April 30 update later revealed that comet shards had crashed across the island and changed locations.
What players saw before Season 4
On April 27, 2018, GamesBeat reported meteorites exploding near players while Epic was teasing the upcoming season. The report describes an in-game spectacle; it does not establish that meteorites targeted or damaged individual players. GamesBeat’s contemporaneous report captured the sightings.
That same day, GameSpot covered an emergency broadcast teaser and the unanswered question of where the meteor might strike. Players speculated about a possible impact on Tilted Towers, but that was not an Epic-confirmed prediction. GameSpot’s April 27 coverage reflects the uncertainty before the season began.
When Epic confirmed what the comet did
Epic resolved the mystery in its April 30, 2018 v4.0 patch notes: shards of a massive comet had crashed into the map, transforming locations. The following day, Epic’s Season 4 announcement described the changed island, including massive craters and glowing Hop Rocks. Epic Games Marketing Coordinator Skyler Laston-Gaeta wrote, “The comet has crashed!” in the May 1 launch announcement. Hop Rocks and the changed map
Epic said players could consume the glowing Hop Rocks to gain low gravity. That gameplay effect was part of the Season 4 map changes, not evidence that the earlier meteorites had hit players.
