In Minecraft, zombies that have loot-pickup enabled can equip armor, weapons, or tools they find on the ground. Not every zombie can do this, and the chance depends on edition and difficulty; Bedrock creators can also control pickup through an entity’s configuration.
Which items can a Minecraft zombie pick up?
The supported categories are armor, weapons, and tools. A zombie may equip suitable gear it encounters, but this does not mean it will collect every dropped item. The available documentation does not establish an exhaustive list of individual items accepted by every zombie.
Equipment choices are selective: zombies can prefer armor or swords in some comparisons, and may replace equipment with an item considered better under the game’s rules. The exact choice depends on the items involved and the zombie’s existing gear.
Why do some zombies ignore dropped gear?
Pickup is conditional, not universal. In Java Edition, the Minecraft Wiki reports that the chance depends on difficulty and regional difficulty. Its figures are 0% on Easy, 0%–55% on Normal, and 6.875%–55% on Hard; the ranges reflect regional difficulty. These are wiki-reported Java mechanics, not probabilities that apply to every edition or version.

In Bedrock creator documentation, pickup is an entity behavior that can be configured. Settings can determine whether a mob picks up items, whether those items go into hand or equipment slots, and which items are excluded. This describes tools for configuring entities; it does not establish that every default Bedrock zombie uses every available setting.
Does the answer vary by Minecraft edition or version?
Yes. The Java probability figures should not be applied to Bedrock, and Bedrock creator configuration should not be treated as a universal rule for default zombies. Minecraft Java Edition 1.21.2 release notes include a bug entry related to CanPickUpLoot, but they do not provide a complete item list or establish that pickup behavior is identical across versions.

For a specific zombie, check the edition and version, the game difficulty (and regional difficulty in Java), and—if it is a creator-made Bedrock entity—whether pickup is enabled and how its item exclusions and equipment slots are set.
