Spiders in Minecraft climb vertical walls, so a plain wall of stone or any other solid block will not stop them. What stops a spider is geometry: it cannot climb along an underside surface, so a lip, overhang, or roof that projects over its path blocks it. The one block-specific exception documented for spiders is the magma block, and that exception applies only to Bedrock Edition.
Why swapping wall materials does not work
Many players expect that a different block will solve a spider problem. In general it will not. Spiders treat ordinary solid blocks as climbable faces, and that behavior applies whether the wall is made of cobblestone, planks, or brick. Changing the material of a vertical wall is therefore not a reliable defense.
Microsoft Learn’s Bedrock creator documentation for the minecraft:navigation.climb component describes the behavior directly: it “Allows this entity to generate paths that include vertical walls like the vanilla Spiders do.” That is an official general statement about climbing, and it is the reason vertical walls should be treated as passable.
The real barrier: undersides, not materials
A spider’s path-finding does not let it climb onto an underside. A wall-top lip that projects outward, an overhang, or a roof creates a surface the spider must cross from below, and it cannot. This is why the defensive designs described in Minecraft Wiki tutorials depend on shape rather than on a special block.

When you build a barrier, check the following before you rely on it:
- The lip or overhang must project far enough that the spider’s approach runs into its underside, not its top face.
- A roof must cover the whole enclosed area, including any corners where the roof meets the wall.
- Any opening in the roof or wall must be narrow enough to block a spider, as described in the next section.
Magma blocks: a Bedrock-only exception
The Minecraft Wiki’s “Spider” article records that spiders do not climb magma blocks in Bedrock Edition. The same page ties this to Bedrock and does not state that Java Edition has the same limitation. A Java player should not build around magma blocks on the assumption that they stop spiders.

The source does not give an exact Bedrock release range for this behavior. If a farm or shelter depends on it, confirm the behavior in your current Bedrock version before you commit materials to the design.
Gaps and openings
A spider can enter through any opening that is wide enough for its body. The Minecraft Wiki’s “Tutorial:Safe home” describes spiders as two blocks wide, so a one-block-wide space cannot be passed. This is a width constraint, not a material property. A one-block gap is therefore a practical way to keep spiders out of a passage, but a gap two blocks wide still allows entry.

Building a spider-resistant enclosure
The tutorials describe three approaches that work from the shape of the barrier rather than its block type. Choose based on what you are protecting and how complete the enclosure needs to be.
- Add a continuous projecting lip. Extend the top of the wall outward so a spider cannot approach the top face from the outside. Keep the lip continuous around the entire perimeter.
- Cover the enclosure with a roof. A roof gives the enclosure a full underside barrier. Check every edge where the roof meets the wall for gaps.
- Use an integrated edge. Tutorials describe fences placed as part of the wall, and glass panes or iron bars used as an edge. These are presented as edge options in the tutorial guidance; the sources do not give measured success rates for them.

What the sources establish and what they do not
The general climbing behavior is supported by Microsoft Learn’s Bedrock documentation. The magma-block exception and the wall-climbing rule come from the Minecraft Wiki “Spider” article, which is a community-maintained reference rather than Mojang release notes. The Minecraft Wiki tutorials on defense and safe homes are living pages, and the copies available for this article were captured earlier, so their wording may lag current releases.

No available source provides a complete, current block-by-block list for Java and Bedrock, or a tested farm design for every version. Treat the lip, roof, and width rules above as practical guidance. Do not extend community reports about glass, signs, or specific farm layouts into universal rules without testing them in your own version of the game.
Keeping a shelter sealed
Spiders can reach an enclosed area through any route that bypasses the wall, including an open roof, a doorway, or an unsealed corner. If the goal is a fully enclosed shelter, close every opening and cover the top completely. Partial barriers reduce access but do not guarantee exclusion.
