On Nintendo Switch, local wireless means nearby compatible systems connect to one another wirelessly. A game can use that connection for multiplayer or another feature; it is distinct from playing with people over the Internet. Whether a game supports local wireless and how you start it depend on that game.
How local wireless works
Nintendo Support describes local communication as a way to “wirelessly search for and connect multiple systems that are near each other for multiplayer play or other communication.” Local communication can also connect some accessories, and some games activate it when opened. The feature is covered for Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch Lite, and Nintendo Switch – OLED Model. Nintendo Support’s local communication article explains the feature.
Local wireless is about communication between nearby systems, not an Internet connection to distant players. It is not a universal mode available in every game, and there is no single setup sequence or player limit for all Switch software.
Does local wireless require internet?
Local wireless itself means nearby-system communication, but that does not guarantee that every game or feature works without Internet access. Check the instructions for the specific title and mode you want to use.

Nintendo’s System Settings overview says Wi-Fi enables both an Internet connection and local wireless play. The shared Wi-Fi setting does not make local and online multiplayer the same thing. Nintendo’s System Settings Overview describes the setting.
Local wireless vs. online play
| Mode | How systems connect | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Local wireless | Nearby supported systems communicate wirelessly. | Whether the game supports the mode, how players host or join, and any title-specific requirements. |
| Online play | Players connect over the Internet, potentially from different locations. | Internet access and any game- or service-specific account or membership requirements. |
Nintendo says an active Internet connection enables play with people around the world. Its general Internet Connection FAQ also says a Nintendo Account is required to play games online or use network features such as Nintendo eShop. Those are general account details; any additional membership requirement depends on the game or service. Nintendo Switch Internet Connection FAQ provides the general information.

- 6.2” LCD screen
- Three play modes: TV, tabletop, and handheld
- Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
- Detachable Joy-Con controllers
- Nintendo Switch is the home of Mario & friends
Example: Animal Crossing: New Horizons
Nintendo’s instructions for Animal Crossing: New Horizons show how the two modes can differ in one game: local play connects multiple consoles nearby, while online play uses the Internet. For local play, the host selects “Via local play” at the Airport, and other players join locally. The game’s instructions document local wireless play for up to eight players. These steps and the limit apply to this game, not to every Switch title. Nintendo’s local and online multiplayer instructions for Animal Crossing: New Horizons give the game-specific details.
In those same instructions, online play requires an Internet connection and Nintendo Switch Online membership. Treat that as a requirement for the specified game’s online mode, not as a universal rule for local wireless or all online games.
