If you find the number on another account, remove it there, then add it to the account you use for Overwatch 2 and complete the SMS verification. Blizzard says one phone number cannot be used on multiple accounts at the same time.
Find out whether the number is on another Battle.net account you own
The error usually means the number is associated with a different account. Sign in to any Battle.net accounts you may have used, including older ones, and check each account’s Account Details page. Blizzard’s account setup instructions place phone-number management in Account Details.

- Sign in to a Battle.net account you control.
- Open Account Details and look for the phone number.
- Repeat for other accounts you may have used.
- If you find the number on another account, remove it there. Then add it to the Battle.net account you use for Overwatch 2 and complete the SMS check.
Blizzard’s Overwatch 2 Defense Matrix announcement says the same phone number cannot be used on multiple accounts at once, or to create multiple accounts for the same applicable game.
Check the number and country settings
If you cannot find the number on another account you control, check that the phone number is eligible and that its country code matches the country listed on your Battle.net account. Blizzard’s SMS Protect guidance says VoIP, WiFi, text-only, and internet phone services are not supported.

Prepaid plans became eligible in many cases after a November 17, 2022 update, but eligibility can still vary by carrier and plan. A prepaid number is not guaranteed to work simply because it is prepaid.
If you cannot find the number on an account you can access
Read Blizzard Support’s “This Phone Number is Already in Use on Another Account” article for the current guidance on this error. Blizzard support text reproduced in a forum says Customer Support cannot unlink a phone number from certain game-account associations, so opening a ticket does not guarantee that Blizzard can release the number.

If the number may have belonged to someone else
A recycled number may still be associated with a prior holder’s account. An older Blizzard forum reply suggests asking a Game Master about this situation, but current official guidance does not establish a guaranteed process or outcome. You can raise it with support, but do not assume the number can be unlinked.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What will not resolve the account association
The documented self-service fix is to remove the number from another Battle.net account you control and add it to the account you intend to use. Buying a replacement phone or SIM, or installing an authenticator, is not established as a fix for a number already associated with another account.
